GymDawgs Journal - Nikki Waiss

Another season of Husky gymnastics is about to begin! We started back to classes on Monday and are getting ready to head Denver this weekend for our first meet of the season. This is the fun part of gymnastics when we finally get to show everyone what we have spent the last seven months training so hard for. Coaches gave us the weekend off and we had a light practice last Friday after working very hard and spending many days in the gym after Christmas break. I was very impressed with the energy in the gym today. Everyone came off the weekend raring to go and ready to start the season. We had our first pre-meet meeting before practice to discuss the logistics of the meet this weekend. We received our itineraries, packing lists and rooming assignments. Of course, we had to cover all of the small details for the freshmen, such as what bags to bring, what to pack, what we wear when, etc.
All of the energy and excitement for the start of season is amazing. This is the time of year when anything is possible and our expectations are high. We have ambitious goals for the year and plan to attain them. It is fun to see everyone stepping up and working hard on to make it into the lineup. I continue to be impressed with the desire and effort of every team member to improve and perfect their routines. We push and encourage each other, which is exactly what we need in order to continue improving.
It is exciting to watch everyone try to add more difficulty to their routines this year and get "competition ready." Kristen Omori should be adding her triple twist at the end of her floor routine and Ashley should be doing her pike full-in in her floor routine and has also upgraded her dismount off bars to a double layout. Kelly Gilbert earned Dawg of the Week last week for her improvement and great efforts on floor and beam. I have especially been impressed with how the freshmen have been preparing the last few weeks. They are a great addition to the team this year and will be a huge part of our success. Watch out for Kristen's bars, Haley's vault, Sam's competitiveness and consistency and look out for Karen on any event. Danielle is still rehabbing, but her triple fulls on floor looked great today!
I can't believe this is year five and my last season as Husky gymnast. I am not ready for it to be over, but I am incredibly excited for this season.
Go Dawgs!
Nikki
