The Dual: No. 1 Washington Vs. No. 2 California Saturday At Redwood Shores
April 21, 2026 | Men's Rowing
The No. 1-ranked Washington men's rowing team will travel south to Redwood Shores to take on its biggest rival this Saturday at The Dual, vs. California – the most important and longest-running rowing rivalry in the West.
This year, due to scheduling conflicts, the men's and women's Duals are being held on separate weekends. The Washington women won six of seven races April 11 at Redwood Shores.
Racing begins at 9:10 a.m. Fans who are attending in person are encouraged to join UW's official race party (more info below). A video stream of the regatta will air on overnght.com (subscription required) and live timing will be provided on HereNow.com. This year, The Dual will be held along with two women's rowing duals between Stanford and Texas, and the Stanford and Brown lightweight programs.
Here's the schedule of the UW races:
9:10 a.m. – Men's Fifth Varsity 8+
9:30 a.m. – Men's Freshman 8+
9:50 a.m. – Men's Third Varsity 8+
10:10 a.m. – Men's Second Varsity 8+
10:30 a.m. – Men's Varsity 8+ (Schoch Cup)
The Washington-California men's varsity eight dual series dates back to 1903, with 113 meetings between the two schools. At stake is the Schoch Cup, named after Delos "Dutch" Schoch of Washington's class of 1936 (Schoch was the alternate for the famed "Boys In The Boat"). Washington holds a 78-34-1 record in the dual meeting.
Washington's men's second varsity eight series with Cal dates back to 1939, with the UW winning 54 of 79 races. The UW's freshman eight race began in 1939, with Washington wining 61 of 82 races.
Last year at Redwood Shores, Washington's men won four of five races – all but the varsity four.
Following the Cal Dual, the Huskies will have just one week to prepare for the 2026 Windermere Cup/Opening Day Regatta on Saturday, May 2. This year, the UW welcomes men's and women's crews from Great Britain, as well as the women's Canadian National Team.
