Both UW Men's Crews Move On To Henley Semifinals
July 03, 2026 | Men's Rowing
HENLEY-ON-THAMES, U.K. – Two University of Washington men's crew each earned a berth in the semifinals with victories in The Ladies' Challenge Plate and The Temple Challenge Cup quarterfinals Friday at Henley Royal Regatta.
The two Husky eights will race Saturday, looking to book a spot in Sunday's finals.
Washington's Temple Challenge Cup entry, an eight made up of athletes from the Huskies' second and third varsity eights from this past season, won its third race of the regatta, having beaten a crew from Radley College (U.K.) in the round of 32 on Wednesday, and a Dutch eight in the round of 16 on Thursday.
On Friday, that UW eight raced a crew from Syracuse University. Washington took the lead from the start and never trailed, though Syracuse remained in contact with the Huskies for a large portion of the 2,112-meter course.
Washington won the race by 3/4 of a length and will move to on face A.S.R. Nereus "A" (NED) in the semifinals.
Washington's top men's crew, competing in The Ladies' Plate Challenge, made its 2026 Henley debut later in the day, rowing against a crew from Thames Rowing Club (U.K.). That Husky crew, which included five members of Washington's 2026 IRA champion varsity eight, got a challenge from the Thames rowers at the start, but pulled away to comfortable lead before long.
Washington rowed to a clear win, but there was a referee's inquiry as the Thames R.C. crew was possibly impeded past the midway point of the course by a motorboat, which was reportedly trying to chase a swan out of the path of the racing shells.
After a delay to consider that inquiry, the officials eventually declared Washington the winner, by two and a half lengths.
On Saturday, Washington will face a crew representing Cambridge University & Harvard University in The Ladies' Challenge Plate semifinal.
