Avery Howell Named USBWA Player Of The Week
January 06, 2026 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE — Avery Howell was named to the USBWA National Team of the Week following her 22-point, 16-rebound double-double in Thursday's win against No. 6 Michigan. Howell was also selected to the Big Ten Honor Roll by the league office on Monday.
Her 16 rebounds against the Wolverines set a new career-high and marked the most in a game by a Husky since Jan. 21, 2018. Her 22 points marked the third-most Michigan has allowed to an individual player this season, and earned the third double-double of the season for Howell. The Boise, Idaho product put UM on upset watch before the first half even came to a close — tallying 16 points and 10 rebounds to pace Washington to a 13-point halftime lead.
Against Northwestern, Howell poured in a career-best 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field (66.7%). She added three steals on the defensive end of the floor and pulled down five rebounds. Combined with Elle Ladine, who also contributed 23 points, Washington had two teammates post 20-plus points for the second time this season.
Howell becomes the fourth Husky to be recognized as a National Player of the Week. Tuesday marks the first time in program history Washington has had two different players win the honor in the same season, with Sayvia Sellers selected on Nov. 18, 2025 for her 30-point effort against Utah.
In Washington's second season in the conference, the Huskies have now had three different players recognized as a Big Ten Player of the Week or member of the Big Ten Honor Roll — with Howell joining Sellers and Ladine.
The sophomore is averaging 13.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists per game, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 45 percent from the field. Howell also ranks fourth in the Big Ten in rebounds per game (7.9) and sixth in 3-pointers per game (2.6). She has scored in double figures in 11 outings this season, and has now done so in the Huskies' last nine games.
No. 23 Washington is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 8, hosting No. 15 Michigan State at Alaska Airlines Arena. The 6:00 p.m. tip-off on B1G+ will be the Huskies' final home game before departing for Purdue on Sunday, Jan. 11.
