SEATTLE -- Big Ten year two begins for Husky Volleyball this week as Washington makes its first visit to West Lafayette in 37 years, and its first ever trip to Bloomington. Thursday, the Huskies start the twenty match conference marathon at 10th-ranked Purdue, with first serve in Mackey Arena at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time. That will also be UW's first appearance this season on the Big Ten Network. On Saturday, Sept. 27, the Dawgs will take on Indiana at 4 p.m. Pacific time inside Wilkinson Hall, with a live stream on Big Ten Plus.
Washington enters conference play with a 5-5 record, but the Huskies have tested themselves against a tough slate. Thursday will be UW's third road match already this season against teams ranked 11th or higher. In the previous two, the Dawgs were close in nearly ever set, but fell 1-3 at No. 11 SMU and 0-3 at No. 6 Kentucky. The match at Kentucky to end non-conference play saw the Huskies with late leads in each of the first two sets, but UW couldn't sustain its high level to the finish. They'll get another chance against the Boilermakers.
Purdue is 9-1 and has big wins over No. 10 SMU, and No. 15 Kansas, with one loss to then-No. 23 Georgia Tech. Purdue reached the NCAA Round of 16 a year ago. Kenna Wollard ranks third among Big Ten players with 4.50 kills per set, and is hitting .265. Grace Heaney also adds 3.05 kills per set, hitting .316. Taylor Anderson has Purdue hitting .299 as a team, and averages 10.63 assists per set. Ryan McAleer has a team-leading 3.55 digs per set. UW won its only prior visit to West Lafayette, back in 1988.
The Hoosiers are also 9-1 entering conference play and will take on Northwestern on Wednesday in their B1G opener. Indiana's one loss came last week to Western Kentucky. They opened their season with a 3-2 win over Miami, which is now ranked 24th. Indiana's .338 attack percentage is best in the league through non-conference play. They rank third with 2.94 blocks per set and fourth with 1.88 aces per set. Teodora Krickovic is second in the Big Ten with 11.03 assists per set. Candela Alonso-Corcelles leads with 3.74 kills per set and is hitting .345, while Avry Tatum is averaging 3.56 kills per set on an outstanding .436 attack percentage.
