Second Half Surge Leads Iowa Over Washington In Iowa City
February 22, 2025 | Men's Basketball
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Washington led wire-to-wire in the first half but hot shooting in the second half was too much to overcome as the Huskies fell at Iowa 85-79 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Saturday.
Mekhi Mason led the Huskies in scoring for the third consecutive game with 19, while Great Osobor posted his eighth double double and DJ Davis returned from a one-game absence to add 17, including five makes behind the arc.
Washington shot 52.9% from the field, knocking down nine threes, but Hawkeyes converted 5-of-7 attempts from deep in the second half to pull away late.
The Huskies led by as much as 12 in the opening stanza but an 8-0 Iowa run to close the half pulled the Hawkeyes within one, 34-33 at the break.
UW responded with an 8-0 run of its own to open the second half, rebuilding the lead to nine but Iowa narrowed the gap to two just minutes later and deadlocked the game for the first time since the opening score 48-48 with 13:18 on the clock.
After Payton Sandfort was fouled on an attempted three, the senior knocked down all three attempts at the charity stripe, giving Iowa its first lead of the game, 59-56.
Mason made a pair from the line with just under six minutes remaining to tie the score back up at 66 apiece, but Sandfort and the Hawkeyes were too much down the stretch, pulling away late and converting clutch free throws to secure the victory on their home floor.
The Huskies continue their road trip onto Wisconsin on Tuesday, taking on the Badgers in Madison. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. PT, airing on the Big Ten Network.
