SEATTLE -- A week that Homer had circled on his calendar for a couple thousand years arrives this weekend, as Husky Volleyball hosts the unofficial "Trojan War Week" with the Spartans of Michigan State and the Trojans of USC both coming to Alaska Airlines Arena. Washington (10-12, 5-7 Big Ten) has just four weeks remaining in the regular season to make a postseason push, and conquering the invading Spartans and Trojans would provide a major boost.
Friday night at 7 p.m. the Huskies host Michigan State, then 17th-ranked USC is in on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match. Both match-ups will be live stream only on Big Ten Plus. Sunday will also be the Native American Heritage Match, and will be a post-match autograph signing opportunity with the full team.
UW is still very much in the postseason tournament picture despite sitting two games under .500, as the Huskies have played the second-hardest schedule in the nation this year. Their RPI currently sits at No. 42, while Michigan State comes in ranked 34th, and USC at 17th. The Dawgs will also need to reach .500 at season's end to potentially qualify for an NCAA tourney return.
Last week, UW had one of its best attacking matches, hitting .372 in a sweep of Oregon, but then had its lowest hitting percentage of the year at UCLA, at just .095. Senior Zoria Heard was the big bright spot against the Bruins, posting a career-high 29 digs and going over the 1,000 career digs mark.
Michigan State is one game ahead of the Huskies in the B1G with a 6-6 conference record after going 10-0 in non-conference play. Last week, MSU nearly upset No. 10 Purdue, falling in five sets in East Lansing, and then swept Rutgers. In Big Ten matches, the Spartans are hitting .222 and surrendering a .262 percentage. They rank eighth in the league with 1.48 aces per set but just 16th in blocks with 1.75 per set. Karolina Staniszewska leads the team with 3.22 kills per set in league play with Bianca Mumcular adding 3.04. Zuzanna Kulig is hitting .363 with 1.83 kills per set in B1G play with 1.02 blocks per set. Lia Schneider is posting 2.80 digs per set. The Huskies won the first Big Ten meeting between the squads last year in East Lansing in four sets. MSU's last trip to Seattle was the 2015 NCAA tourney where UW won in the second round.
UW and USC meet again after playing just two weeks ago in L.A., a match the Trojans won in four sets. In that match, the Huskies had more digs (74-73) and blocks (10.0 - 7.0) but USC had 13 more kills (60-47) and was just a bit more efficient overall (.207-.182). Simona Mateska had 13 kills and hit .379 to lead UW but USC middle Mia Tvrdy had 15 kills and hit .500. Tvrdy is producing a lot out of the middle with 2.53 kills per set in conference play. London Wijay is ninth in the Big Ten with 3.68 kills per set, hitting .251. Rylie McGinest adds 1.61 kills per set hitting .339. Reese Messer is No. 2 in the league in assists per set with 10.86. Taylor Deckert is fifth in league matches with 3.37 digs per set and Abigail Mullen is third in the conference in aces with 21 in league play. UW is trying to snap a five-match skid against USC.
