BOSTON – The NCAA Indoor Championships opened up tonight with the men's and women's weight throws, featuring Husky record-holder Jayden White in his fourth-straight and final indoor championship. White earned a third-straight podium finish, landing in eighth-place today to put the UW men's team on the board heading into a full day's action on Friday.
The weight throws were moved to Thursday and held separate from the rest of the meet due to facility safety concerns. White was the first thrower in the field of 16 and therefore the first competitor in the championship, taking place this year at The TRACK at New Balance.
White had to come up clutch in round three after he had two fouls on his first two attempts, both going just wide to the left of the sector. On his third throw, he went 72-11 ¼ which put him in seventh after the round ended, and the field was reduced from 16 to the top-nine.
The Everett, Wash. native was unable to connect for a big one in his next three attempts and he would get bumped one place to eighth. His sixth and final round throw was his second-best of the day at 72-5 ¾.
The eighth-place finish scores one point for the Dawgs and is White's sixth Top-10 finish at an NCAA Championship, indoors or out. He was top-10 in all four years in the weight throw.
Friday's long day of competition starts early for the Huskies with the men's heptathlon and Bruno Comin Pescador going at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time/6:30 a.m. Pacific. The first event aside from the multis will start at 2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT with the men's pole vault, and the first running event is the men's mile semifinals at 4:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. PT.
