Huskies Comeback Bid Falls Short At No. 14 Texas
March 17, 2024 | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas – Washington trimmed a 4-0 deficit down to a single run on Sunday but couldn't complete the comeback, dropping the series finale at No. 14 Texas, 4-3.
Starter Spencer Dessart went one-plus inning, allowing three runs. Isaac Yeager issued a single run in relief, while Gianluca Shinn pitched 4.1 shutout frames with three strikeouts.
Despite not recording a hit, the Longhorns plated a pair in the first. Back-to-back walks to leadoff the inning came back to bite Dessart, as a fielder's choice and a ground out made it 2-0 Texas after one.
After a sacrifice fly added another run for the Longhorns in the second, heavy rain in the third helped UT tack on another run on a bases-loaded walk, making it 4-0.
Blake Wilson got the Huskies on the board in the fourth, slicing an RBI double into the right-center gap, bringing around Cooper Whitton.
AJ Guerrero's second homer in as many games, a two-run blast in the eighth, pulled U Dub within a run, but the Dawgs couldn't draw even by inning's close and due to UW's travel restrictions, the game was called.
The Huskies will face another ranked foe on the road next weekend, returning to Pac-12 play to take on No. 3 Oregon State in Corvallis, Oregon.
DAWG BITES
• Aiva Arquette and Jeter Ybarra extended their hitting streaks to 11 and 10 games, respectively
• The Washington bullpen had its streak of 23.1 innings without allowing an earned run snapped
• The Husky bullpen has allowed just one earned run over its last six games
