Huskies Top No. 25 Utah State On Penalties, Advance To NCAA Second Round
November 15, 2024 | Women's Soccer
LOGAN, Utah – Following a hard-fought, sometimes chaotic, 110 minutes of regulation and overtime, the Washington women's soccer team defeated No. 25 Utah State 3-1 on penalties Friday, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
It was the second shootout victory for the Huskies in as many weeks, defeating then-No. 17 Iowa on PKs after a scoreless draw in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals.
In a first 45 minutes that didn't provide many clear cut scoring opportunities, UW created perhaps the best look off a corner as Kelsey Branson's knock-back found Kalea Eichenberger's head. However, the junior forward's header drifted wide of the near post.
Shortly after the restart, a Utah State free kick fell kindly to the feet of Aggie midfielder Summer Diamond, firing a shot at goal that required a strong hand from Husky keeper Olivia Juarez.
A little under 20 minutes later, Kolo Suliafu nearly pushed UW ahead with a volleyed shot from the top of the 18-yard box, sending a bending ball just over the crossbar in the 66th minute.
After 80 minutes of a mostly dogged defensive battle, chaos ensued through the final 10 minutes of regulation, culminating in a heroic moment from Juarez.
With just under 60 ticks left on the clock, a service toward goal evaded everybody and looked destined for the back of the net. Instead, Juarez lunged out with her left leg to keep the clean sheet intact, allowing Maya Loudd to clear the ball off the line.
With neither side able to break the deadlock, the match extended into extra time.
Not long into the first overtime period, Juarez took hard contact in the box and was forced to exit, bringing Mia Hamant in off the bench, eventually setting the junior shot stopper up for another successful PK performance.
Washington buried all three of its penalties and after the final of three Aggie misses sailed over the bar, the Huskies rushed to Hamant, burying the California keeper in a Dawg pile inside the 18-yard box.
Washington will await the winner of Mississippi State vs. Southern to determine its second round opponent, scheduled for No. 22. Time and location are to be determined.
