UW Drops Hard Fought Match to No. 2 Mississippi State, Bows Out In Round Of 32
November 22, 2024 | Women's Soccer
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Washington gave No. 2 Mississippi State all it could handle on its home turf Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field but a breakaway goal in the 72nd minute proved the different as the Bulldogs advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 1-0 win.
Husky keeper Mia Hamant was stellar in goal as she has been all season, making eight stops on the night, her second most in a match in 2024.
The two sides played a physical, defensive battle through the first half. While UW held a slight advantage in possession, shots were a dead heat at eight aside. However, neither team could carve out a true threat, hitting the half scoreless.
Play remained even after the restart as each team tried to crack the code on the opposing defense.
When it looked like the Huskies were potentially headed for another scoreless half, Mississippi State struck on the counter-attack with just over 18 minutes remaining, taking the lead as Zoe Main beat Mia Hamant to her right.
Washington pushed for an equalizer to the final whistle but were unable to break through, ending its season in the Round of 32.
