Dawgs Top USC 8-3, Advance to Pac-12 Tournament Semis
May 25, 2023 | Baseball
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. β Washington (34-17, 17-12 Pac-12) took the lead three batters into the bottom of the first and never surrendered it Thursday, taking down USC (34-23-1, 17-13 Pac-12) 8-3 to win Pool C and advance to the Semifinals of the 2023 Pac-12 Tournament at Scottsdale Stadium.
Β
Starter Stu Flesland III picked up his seventh win of the season, tossing 5.2 innings with two runs allowed on one hit and five walks. Case Matter collected the final four outs for the save.
Β
Cam Clayton jumped on Trojan starter Caden Aoki right away, ripping the second pitch he faced down the left line for a leadoff double. The Husky shortstop moved to third on Will Simpson's fly ball and came home on Coby Morales' grounder to open scoring.
Β
Jeter Ybarra tacked on two more in the fifth, delivering a two-out single to center that brought in Simpson and Morales to make it 3-0.
Β
Flesland cruised through the early going, facing just two over the minimum through five scoreless but ran into trouble in the sixth. The lefty issued back-to-back walks to leadoff the frame and it cost him as USC drew to within a run.
Β
Clayton got one of those runs right back in the home half, smacking a double into the left-center gap to bring Nick Hovland all the way around from first, extending the lead to 4-2.
Β
The Trojans looked poised to do more damage in the seventh, loading the bases with one out. However, head coach Jason Kelly called on Sam Boyle out of the bullpen and the true freshman came through with the goods, escaping the jam unscathed.
Β
USC got to Boyle for a run in the eighth but once again Kelly pushed the right buttons, summoning Matter with the tying run at third, with the righty needing just three pitches to close the inning on a punchout.
Β
With momentum on their side, Washington broke things open in the bottom half of the inning. Simpson got things started with an RBI single, followed by a Morales double to tack on another run. Back-to-back sacrifice flies by AJ Guerrero and Johnny Tincher came next, putting the Dawgs up 8-3 heading to the ninth.
Β
Matter surrendered a one-out single but got the next two outs with ease, locking down the win to keep Washington's tournament run alive.
