Washington’s Comeback Falls Short Against Cal
May 19, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE – After digging itself an early hole, Washington (33-15, 17-10) fought valiantly but couldn't complete its comeback Friday night at Husky Ballpark, falling to Cal (23-26, 11-18 Pac-12), 12-7.
Kiefer Lord took the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs over 3.1 innings.
Despite the lopsided score, Cal took the game's first lead, plating a run in the second on a two-out double down the right field line. However, from there it was all Dawgs.
A leadoff home run got Cal on the board first, but Johnny Tincher leveled the score the next frame, cranking a solo home run high into the trees in left.
However, the middle innings belonged to the Golden Bears. Cal responded with six runs in the third, including a three-run homer, to seize control.
A two-run shot in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth added on as the Golden Bears took a 10-1 advantage into the late innings.
Washington would not go quietly posting five sixth-inning runs to narrow the deficit to four. Michael Snyder and Jeter Ybarra notched back-to-back RBI singles and after a wild pitch plated a Husky run, Sam DeCarlo shot a single down the left line to score two more, cutting the Cal lead to 10-6.
Sam DeCarlo's RBI groundout in the eighth got the Huskies within three but a two-run home run in the ninth put Cal back up five and Washington couldn't claw back, falling for the first time in its last eight games.

• Friday night's attendance of 2,435 is the third-highest ever at Husky Ballpark.
