Dawgs Break Out the Boom Sticks in 12-1 Game One Win
May 18, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE – The Husky bats stayed hot Thursday night at Husky Ballpark, crushing three mammoth home runs in a 12-1 rout of Cal (22-26, 10-18 Pac-12) as Washington (33-14, 17-10 pac-12) won its seventh straight game.
Stu Flesland III earned his sixth win of the season, providing six innings of one run ball with five strikeouts. Grant Cunningham gathered his fourth save, delivering three scoreless frames in relief.
Despite the lopsided score, Cal took the game's first lead, plating a run in the second on a two-out double down the right field line. However, from there it was all Dawgs.
The Huskies responded immediately, scratching three across in the bottom half. Michael Snyder's RBI double plated Will Simpson to get things started and a bases loaded walk by Sam DeCarlo and RBI ground out from Cam Clayton put UW ahead 3-1 after two.
McKay Barney's single up the middle in the third scored Jeter Ybarra from second to add another run before Coby Morales tanked a two-run blast off the batter's eye in the fourth, extending the lead to 6-1.
An errant throw added another UW run in the fifth and Simpson tacked on four more with a bang, plastering a line drive to left 422 feet for a grand slam, making it 11-1 in favor of the home team.
Not to be outdone, Snyder hammered a no-doubter of his own in the sixth, sending a towering shot 426 feet over the scoreboard in left.
With a 12-1 lead in hand, Cunningham finished things off with three-straight scoreless innings to sinch the series opener for the Huskies.
