Diamond Dawgs Blow Out No. 24 Oregon, 14-5
May 12, 2023 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Behind a four-hit night from Coby Morales and four mammoth home runs, Washington (30-14, 14-10 Pac-12) won game one of its series at No. 24 Oregon (31-17, 14-11 Pac-12) in blow out fashion, topping the Ducks 14-5 at PK Park Friday night.
Stu Flesland III picked up his fifth win of the campaign, allowing two runs over six-plus innings, surrendering five hits while striking out three. Sam Boyle tossed two scoreless innings in relief, while Reilly McAdams finished things off in the ninth.
The Huskies jumped ahead to an early lead as Coby Morales took a pitch the other way and over the fence in left-center for a solo homer.
Oregon countered with a two-run home run in the third, but Morales gave the Dawgs the lead right back, pulling a two-run double to the right-center gap to bring around Sam DeCarlo and Cam Clayton.
With the lead back in hand, Washington broke things open with a five-run fourth. Aiva Arquette got things started with a leadoff bomb, plastering a hanging breaking ball for a no-doubter.
Walks to DeCarlo and Clayton followed and just like the previous inning, Morales came through, doubling down right field line to score DeCarlo. Two pitches later, Will Simpson took a big hack at a pitch over the middle and didn't miss, blasting a three-run shot to dead center.
Jeter Ybarra extended the lead to 9-2 in the seventh, lining a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Johnny Tincher. On the other side, the Huskies continued to work around danger, holding the Ducks off the board.
With the game in control, U Dub blew the doors off in the ninth. After Morales singled for his fourth hit of the night, Simpson unloaded, walloping a two-run nuke over the bullpen and out of the stadium in left.
Keeping things moving, Clayton drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field and AJ Guerrero followed with an RBI single of his own, bringing the score to 14-2.
Oregon clawed three runs back in the bottom half but it wasn't nearly enough as Washington drew first blood in the series.
