Huskies Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader to Oregon State
April 01, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE β Washington fell twice to Oregon State on Saturday, dropping both ends of its twin bill at Husky Ballpark.
Β
GAME ONE | OSU 6, UW 3
Offense early and late from the Beavers proved too much in Game One as Oregon State took the series opener by a score of 6-3.
Β
Kiefer Lord took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over 5.1 innings. Gianluca Shinn faced just one batter but got two outs, while Grant Cunningham finished the final three frames with two runs allowed.
Β
Oregon State struck first, getting a two-out single in the first from Mikey Kane to drive in a pair. Cam Clayton got one of those runs right back in the home half, launching a leadoff home run 404 feet over the wall in left-center to make it 2-1.
Β
The Beavers added a run with some sly baserunning in the second. With runners at the corners, the runners on first bolted for second and got hung up, giving Dallas Macias time to come home from third before being tagged out.
Β
A solo home run in the fourth made it a three-run lead, but the Huskies answered in the bottom half to draw close.
Β
Johnny Tincher led off with a double, scoring shortly after on Coby Morales' RBI single. AJ Guerrero singled to put two on and Jeter Ybarra poked an RBI single to center to drive home Morales. UW went on to load the bases but couldn't capitalize to take the lead.
Β
Oregon State added an insurance run in each of the eighth and ninth innings and the Huskies were unable to respond. Dropping the first game of the twin bill.
Β
GAME TWO | OSU 5, UW 1
A second inning grand slam provided too big of a hole to climb out of in the late game as Oregon State secured the sweep with a 5-1 victory.
Β
Stu Flesland took the loss, allowing the four runs on the grand slam in his two innings of work. Calvin Kirchoff provided 3.1 strong innings of relief with a single run surrendered, while Riley McAdams struck out four and only allowed a pair of knocks in his 3.2 innings.
Β
After a quick first frame, three second inning walks came back to bite Flesland as Travis Bazzana took an inside pitch and didn't miss, planting a ball over the right field fence to put the Beavers up 4-0.
Β
Garret Forrester added a Beaver run with a solo shot in the fourth, but Johnny Tincher got it right back with a solo jack of his own, crushing a ball into Unio Bay in left-center.
Β
The Dawgs put themselves in a position to cut into the deficit in the seventh, loading the bases with the top of the order coming up, but failed to break through as Oregon State secured the doubleheader sweep.
Β
QUICK HITS
β’ Saturday's attendance of 1,845 was the seventh-highest ever at Husky Ballpark.
