Thomas Keeps Records Coming, Breaks 800m Mark
February 04, 2023 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – Less than twenty-four hours after helping the Huskies break the NCAA Record in the distance medley relay, Carley Thomas and Marlena Preigh were back on the BU indoor track and racing to the two fastest 800-meter times in school history. Thomas clocked a 2:02.15, the fastest 800m ever run by a Husky woman indoors or out, and Preigh set another huge PR in a time of 2:03.75.
The mark from Thomas was the third School Record of a weekend where UW went out from the Dempsey and sent smaller groups to four different meets. In addition, Saturday saw a Freshman Record in the heptathlon from Bruno Comin Pescador, the second-fastest 3k in school history from Brian Fay on national TV, and the fastest 4x400m relay for the Huskies in 17 years.
Feb. 3-4, Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invitational
At the BU Track & Tennis Center, where on Friday night the relay of Sophie O'Sullivan, Marlena Preigh, Carley Thomas, and Anna Gibson took down the collegiate DMR record, all four runners returned for individual races, along with freshman Chloe Foerster.
Gibson and O'Sullivan raced the mile today. Gibson finished in 4:33.46, slightly faster than her 1,600m relay split last night. O'Sullivan, whose 1200m DMR split last night was the fastest on record, finished in 4:39.35, a few seconds off her season-best.
Thomas unofficially split 2:01.9 for her 800m leg last night and she was able to nearly duplicate that again today, coming through in 2:02.15. That puts her up at No. 3 in the NCAA this season. Preigh will also likely be on the edge of the top-16 with her 2:03.75 time that improves her own No. 2 mark in school history. Preigh had a PR of 2:06.06 from 2021 until last week when she dropped that to 2:04.95. One week later and she knocked off more than a full second once again.
Foerster continued her impressive freshman season with another season-best time of 2:05.87, which moves her up to a tie for fifth in school history.
New Balance Indoor Grand Prix
Brian Fay was the one Husky traveling solo this weekend as he got the invite to the prestigious New Balance Indoor Grand Prix at the new balance headquarters in Boston. Fay was the only collegiate battling a field of elite pros in the 3,000-meters, shown live on NBC this afternoon.
Once the pace setter dropped out, Fay took the lead and held it for several laps, until two laps to go. He stayed with the lead group in the final push and came through in a PR time of 7:43.85, less than a second off the School Record set earlier this season by teammate Kieran Lumb. Both Lumb and Fay should be ranked top-10 in the 3k after the dust settles.

In Nebraska, where Ida Eikeng broke the UW pentathlon record on Friday, Bruno Comin Pescador and Jami Schlueter both finished up their heptathlons with new Husky top-10 scores.
Comin Pescador, a native of Santander, Spain, was incredibly impressive in his first collegiate multi. His second day consisted of a 60-meter hurdles time of 8.27 seconds, and then a pole vault clearance of 14-9. The freshman then won the final 1,000-meters in 2:43.59.
That gave Comin Pescador a final score of 5,745 points, the second-highest total in school history behind All-American and U.S. Olympian Jeremy Taiwo, and it also broke Taiwo's Freshman Record of 5,559 points from 2009. It also moves Comin Pescador into 14th nationally this year, with the top-16 making NCAAs.
Schlueter had a 60-meter hurdles of 8.39 seconds today and then made 14-5 ¼ in the pole vault. He ran 2:49.33 for the final 1,000-meters to finish with a total of 5,191 points. That ranks Schlueter ninth in school history.
New Mexico Collegiate Classic
The final big mark for the weekend fittingly came from the 4x400-meter relay, down in Albuquerque at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The Husky men's relay of Anthony Smith, Daniel Gaik, Cass Elliott, and Matthew Wilkinson ran the fastest 4x4 indoors or out by a Husky squad since 2006. They won their heat in a time of 3:07.19, which due to the altitude is officially converted to 3:07.63, the third-fastest time in school history indoors.
Also in New Mexico today, freshman Kaia Tupu-South finished eighth in the shot put with a best of 52-2 ¾, and MaKayla Kelby was ninth going 51-10.
Wilkinson also ran an open 400-meters, and posted a time of 47.88 just slightly off his PR.
