February 03, 2023 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – The Washington women's basketball team (12-9, 4-7) got a big conference win Friday night when they defeated California (11-11, 2-9) 70-54 in Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies led after every quarter, dominating both ends of the court in the decisive win.
"I'm so proud of the way that they continue to prepare and learn, and I thought this was an exceptional week of preparation," head coach Tina Langley said.
Washington started off hot in the first quarter, hitting 5-7 from three. Trinity Oliver hit back-to-back threes, Lauren Schwartz followed with a three, and Elle Ladine followed that with her own back-to-back threes.
Haley Van Dyke sunk a three to get the second quarter started. By halftime, the Huskies were out-scoring and out-rebounding the Golden Bears.
Four Huskies got into double digit scoring in the third quarter, and finished the night with big numbers. Dalayah Daniels had 20, Van Dyke had 14, Oliver had 10, and Ladine had 10.
Daniels's 20 points led all scorers, and was her season high in conference play. Ladine's 10 points tied her career high. On top of scoring, Van Dyke recorded three steals and led both teams with five assists, and Oliver grabbed six rebounds.
Washington out-rebounded Cal 37-26. Jayda Noble contributed 10 rebounds, the most she's recorded in conference play, and her second double digit rebounding game of the season.
The Husky defense was relentless. The 54 points scored by Cal was their second-lowest scoring game in conference play. The Huskies held the Golden Bears to shooting 35.6% from the field and 20.0% from three, both well below their season and conference averages.
"Team defense was a goal of the game," Langley said. "I just love the way we played team defense."
Meanwhile, UW stayed hot most of the game, finishing with 46.3% from the field and 50.0% from three.
The crowd in Alaska Airlines Arena was electric, and the Huskies felt it.
"Our fans tonight were incredible," Langley said. "Playing at home is special here. This is a community that loves women's basketball."
Oliver agreed.
"They were awesome," Oliver said. "They were loud and we were feeding off of it. They keep coming back and we just love that."
Up next for the Huskies, Washington takes on No. 2 Stanford on Sunday at 12 p.m. PT in Alaska Airlines Arena.
