Huskies Head to the Bay; Play Cal Thursday
February 21, 2023 | Men's Basketball
BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington (15-13, 7-10 Pac-12) takes its momentum on the road this week for a pair of matchups against California and Stanford. The trip begins with a game at Cal at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Guy Haberman and Ben Braun have the call on Pack-12 Networks. Tony Castricone and Jason Hamilton call the action on the Husky Sports Network, and locally on Sports Radio KJR-AM 950.
The Matchup
Washington aims to get back to .500 all-time against Cal when the two teams meet Thursday night. Last month the Huskies and Bears went to overtime for the 18th time in history as the former pulled out a 81-78 win at Alaska Airlines Arena. It was UW's fourth-straight win over Cal and eighth in 11 games. The Huskies have won just twice in Berkeley since 2013.
Pac-12 Freshman of the Week
Keyon Menifield became the second Husky to be named Freshman of the Week this season joining Koren Johnson (1/16/23), who became the first Husky to win the award since Jaden McDaniels in March of 2020. UW is one of just two Pac-12 teams to have multiple student-athletes receive the award this season (UCLA).
Milestones:
Head Coach Mike Hopkins became the sixth UW coach to win 100 games with Saturday's win over Oregon State. Jamal Bey passed Darnell Gant for most games played in a Husky uniform when he checked into his 141st game against Arizona. Keion Brooks Jr. scored his 1,000th career point with a first-half three against ASU. Noah Williams eclipsed the 1,000-point mark at USC.
Last Time Out
Five Huskies reached double figures and Washington defeated Oregon State 61-47 on Saturday night. Jamal Bey scored 15 points and Braxton Meah had a double-double. It was the fewest points allowed by the Huskies since December 2020 when they held Seattle U to 41. Koren Johnson racked up five steals, the most by a freshman since 2017 by Jaylen Nowell, who was in the stands on Saturday. Game recap
League Leaders:
Washington leads the Pac-12 and ranks eighth in the NCAA in blocks per game (5.5). Braxton Meah leads the Pac-12 in shooting percentage and Keion Brooks Jr. ranks second in scoring.
Signing Day
Four-star recruit Wesley Yates III (Beaumont, Texas/Beaumont United) signed a National Letter of Intent on Nov. 16, announcing his commitment to Washington. Yates is the 37th-ranked prospect on ESPN's Top-100. The signing continues the momentum built from last year's class, which includes the No. 1 rated player in the state of Washington, Tyler Linhardt (Seattle, Wash./King's HS) and guard Keyon Menifield Jr. (Mount Morris, Mich./Phoenix [Ariz.] Prep).
Up Next
The Huskies continue their road trip with a Sunday afternoon game at Stanford. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. on FS1.
