PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Washington (13-13, 5-10 Pac-12) fell in the opening round of the Boeing Apple Cup Series at rival Washington State 56-51 Saturday night.
Noah Williams had 12 points to lead all Huskies and grabbed four rebounds. Braxton Meah added 11 points and 10 rebounds for his second career double-double.
The Huskies twice trimmed their deficit to two points in the second half, but each time Washington State had an answer. Williams made a jumper that made it 37-35 with 12:54 left and later Jamal Bey and Keyon Menifield each scored four points in an 8-0 run with 1:24 remaining but the Cougars answered again to take a 53-47 lead with 42 seconds to go.
Cole Bajema's layup made it 20-all with four minutes left, but the Huskies trailed going into the locker room.
UW missed its first ten shots before making its next three field goals for a run of eight unanswered points.
The team's bench scored 26 points led by Williams and Bey (9).
The Huskies held the Cougars to just 29 percent shooting (17 of 58) from the field, 27 percent (8 of 30) from 3-point range and 67% (14 of 21) from the free-throw line.
"In these games," Head Coach Mike Hopkins said, "to win on the road we've got to be better, we've got to be tougher."
Washington plays host to Oregon on Thursday in what will be a Black Out at Alaska Airlines Arena.
