No. 23 Washington Loses Hard-Fought Battle At No. 19 Louisville
December 20, 2023 | Women's Basketball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – No. 23 Washington women's basketball (11-1, 1-0 Pac-12) fell in a tough battle to No. 19 Louisville (11-2, 0-0 ACC) 51-59 Wednesday night in Louisville, Ky.
The Top-25 matchup on the road was the non-conference finale for the Huskies, and Washington showed great toughness.
"We know that any adversity we face is an opportunity for growth, and I am confident we will gain a lot of knowledge and wisdom from this experience," head coach Tina Langley said.
In a homecoming for the Kentucky native, Lauren Schwartz hit a jumper for the first points on the board, and had the first six points for the Huskies. 200 of Schwartz's family, friends, neighbors, and more from her community from her hometown in Union, Ky. made the trip, cheering her and the Huskies on.
"Lauren is such a giver, incredibly high IQ, talented player, an incredible person," Langley said. "It is an honor to bring her home. Her family has sacrificed for five years - she has never played in front of her family at home, and they were amazing. First of all, just think about 200 people coming from your hometown. I think that says a lot about who you are and who your family is and the love they have for one another. I am just so proud of her."
Schwartz was one of three Huskies in double digits, finishing with a team-leading 13 points and four steals.
By the third quarter, freshman Sayvia Sellers had a career high four made three-pointers and was in double digits with 12 points.
Dalayah Daniels converted an and-one to fire up the team as the Huskies closed in on Louisville's lead. Daniels finished with her 14th career double-double and 10th as a Husky with 12 points and a game-leading 10 rebounds. She also had two blocks and three assists.
Washington held Louisville to their fewest points scored this season, and below their season average field goal percentage.
"Proud of our fight tonight," Langley said. "It was a great defensive battle by both teams."
Up next, Washington rings in the new year on the road, taking on the Bay Area schools with California up first on Friday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. PT in Berkeley, Calif.
