December 10, 2023 | Women's Basketball
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington women's basketball (10-0, 1-0) took down No. 21 Washington State (10-2, 0-1) 60-55 in Sunday afternoon's Boeing Apple Cup Series matchup in Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash. It's the first win for the Huskies in Pullman since 2019.
"So proud of the toughness and togetherness our team continues to show," head coach Tina Langley said. "It's always hard to get a win on the road, but it's especially hard against a talented team like WSU, and in a rivalry game. It's early in the season and there will be so much to learn from a game like this. We are excited to get back to practice and keep working."
The first quarter was a defensive battle, as the Huskies held the Cougars to only two points all quarter (1-15, 6.7%). It was the first time since 2017 that WSU scored two or fewer points, and the first time ever in conference play.
The second quarter saw the Huskies get hot as Hannah Stines hit her second three of the game, and Lauren Schwartz went 3-3 from three.
Chloe Briggs fed a tricky pass to Dalayah Daniels who finished under the basket, and the Huskies were fired up. Schwartz, Daniels, and Stines were all in double digits by halftime.
The Huskies had the 20-point lead going into halftime, holding WSU to 28.6% shooting in the first half. Washington shot 56.0% in the first half, and was 6-9 from three.
Stines hit her third three of the game to set a new career high in scoring, finishing with a game-leading 21 points. Stines went 3-4 from three, tying her career high of made three-pointers in a game. She also recorded a game-leading nine rebounds.
Schwartz scored a new season high points, finishing with 20 points. Sunday was the first time since the 2018-19 season that UW has had two players score 20+ points in a game.
Daniels was the other Husky in double digits, finishing with 11 points, tying her career high in steals with four, and adding three blocks.
UW held WSU well under their season average field goal percentage with 38.6%.
Defeating No. 21 WSU in Pullman was the first time UW has defeated a ranked opponent on the road since the 2016-17 season.
Going 10-0 to tip off the season is the best start since the Huskies went 10-0 at the beginning of the 1997-98 season. A 10-game win streak ties for No. 5 for longest win streaks in program history.
The early conference rivalry matchup was a break in the non-conference schedule. Up next, Washington is back home to host Saint Mary's on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. PT in Alaska Airlines Arena.
