November 02, 2023 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Closing out the regular season, Washington will battle in-state rival Washington State on Friday at Husky Soccer Stadium, hosting the Cougars in the annual Boeing Apple Cup matchup.
Washington will be looking to repeat last season's success against the Cougars, in which the Huskies came back not once but twice to upset WSU to capture the first UW victory in Pullman since 1996.
Prior to the match, Washington will celebrate Senior Night at Husky Soccer Stadium, celebrating the careers of Megan Nail, Hayden Crowley, Sophie Dimry and Hailey Still.
Friday's affair will air on Pac-12 Washington. Links to live coverage are available above.
SCOUTING WASHINGTON STATE
Todd Shulenberger is in his ninth season as the head coach at Washington State, guiding the Cougars to six NCAA Tournament bids in that time. Shulenberger is zeroing in on his 100th win at WSU, entering Friday with a 98-54-23 record on The Palouse.
Having drawn three matches in a row and four of their last five, the Cougars sit at 9-5-4, sitting just below the Huskies in the Pac-12 standings at 2-4-4 in league play.
A 2022 All-Pac-12 performer, senior Margie Detrizio leads Washington State in nearly every offensive category, including points, goals, assists, shots and shots on goal. The Arizona native has either scored or assisted half of WSU's 26 goals this season.
In goal, junior Nadia Cooper has manned the frame in 17-of-18 matches, posting a pair of clean sheets to go along with a 1.41 goals against average and a .652 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY
While the Cougars own a 15-10-8 advantage in the all-time series, Washington has had the better of their cross-state rivals in recent meetings, posting a 3-1-1 record in the last five meetings. In Seattle, it's been a dead heat, tied at 6-6-3.
LAST MEETING (10/14/22)
PULLMAN, Wash. - Twice erasing a one-goal deficit, Washington completed the comeback Saturday afternoon at Washington State, earning a 3-2 win at Lower Field.
It was the first victory in Pullman for UW since 1996, a year in which none of the members of the 2022 Husky squad had even been born yet.
Summer Yates scored her 27th goal in a Husky kit in the victory, moving the fifth-year senior into a tie for third most ever at UW. Kelsey Branson bagged the winner, the fifth goal of her freshman season and fourth in Pac-12 play.
The Cougars got off to a fast start, with Margie Detrizio burying Grayson Lynch's corner kick delivery into the upper 90 in the 9th minute.
Eight minutes later, Shae Holmes sent a long ball over the top and McKenzie Weinert used a relentless effort to get on the end of it, bulging the back of the net in the 17th minute to even the score at a goal apiece.
WSU regained the lead in the 31st minute as Detrizio slipped a ball to a wide open Lily Boyden in the middle of the 18 and Boyden calmly passed the ball into the right side of the net to make it 2-1.
However, UW once again had a response, leveling the score in the 38th minute. Collecting a loose ball at the endline, Branson fed Weinert for a shot. The attempt was blocked but found the feet of Yates, who scored on the vacant goal to bring the score to 2-2 at the half.
Right from the whistle the Dawgs came out of the halftime break on the front foot and after a pair of near misses, Branson put UW on top in the 70th minute.
The goal came as a result of a beautiful combination from the Dawgs. On an attempted clearance, Claudia Longo used the deftest of touches to put the ball into Elena Palacios' path. Palacios sent a curving ball over the top and Branson beat the offside trap, brought the ball down and hit the side netting, pushing Washington ahead 3-2.
The Huskies were then able to salt away the final 20 minutes of the match, capturing a historic victory at Lower Field.
KEEPING UP
Olivia Juarez posted back-to-back clean sheets in last week's trips to Oregon and Oregon State, becoming the first UW keeper with consecutive shutouts on the road since 2017. Juarez has allowed three goals over the Huskies' last five matches.
TIDE TURNERS
Since Jace Holmes and Hailey Still were inserted into the starting XI, the Huskies have gone undefeated in their last six matches. During the stretch, the Dawgs have posted a trio of wins and draws apiece, including two draws with ranked foes.
WHAT'S GOOD, HOLMES?
Jace Holmes has registered an assist on six of the Huskies' last 11 goals. Despite not recording her first helper of the season until Washington's 12th match of the season, the junior defender is tied for second in the Pac-12 with those six assists.
MONUMENTAL ROAD POINT
Washington's 1-1 draw at No. 2 Stanford was no ordinary tie. The result gave the Huskies their first point against the Cardinal since 2004, snapping a 19-match losing streak to Stanford.
While it took a total team effort to get the job done, two Huskies were noted for their performances for the week. Scoring the opening goal just over five minutes into the contest, Kelsey Branson was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts. Meanwhile, UW keeper Olivia Juarez garnered Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week plaudits after registering a career-high 12 saves, tied for seventh in a single match in program history. Juarez was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.
