Dawgs Battle Back But Fall At ASU, 2-1
October 05, 2023 | Women's Soccer
TEMPE, Ariz. – Battling back valiantly Thursday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium, Washington scored a late equalizer but ultimately fell to Arizona State, 2-1.
The Huskies (5-5-2, 0-4-0 Pac-12) came out on the front foot and controlled the pace of play through the first 15 minutes, creating a handful of half chances lacking only the final ball.
However, the Sun Devils (7-2-4, 2-1-1 Pac-12) answered with period of dominant possession themselves and paid it off in the 34th minute as Ella Opkvitne finished off a feed from Florence Vaillancourt to give ASU the lead.
The Huskies nearly responded immediately off a corner kick but Enora Matté's header was deflected and narrowly saved by Pauline Nelles in the Sun Devil goal.
Chasing a goal at the break, Washington again came out the more aggressive side in the second half.
After knocking on the door for most of the half, the Huskies broke through in the 85th minute through Kelsey Branson's first goal of the season. After Jace Holmes took down Hailey Still's cross and had her shot blocked, Branson cleaned up the rebound and sent it into the vacant net to tie the score.
However, ASU responded less than 30 seconds later, recapturing the lead on Enasia Colon's shot from way out, tucking the long shot inside the top right corner to steal all three points for the Sun Devils.
Washington returns to action on Sunday, making the trip south to Tucson, Arizona, to take on the Arizona Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. PT, streaming on Arizona Live Stream 2.
