Β
The Series
The Washington Huskies head to Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley, CA eager to put last week's series behind them in three games against the California Golden Bears. With both clubs hovering around the .500 mark at the midpoint of the season, this looks to be a statement series that could set the tone for both teams in the second half.
How To Follow
Games will be streamed via Pac-12 Washington as follows: Friday - https://gohski.es/3jdoEMH, Saturday - https://gohski.es/3ueSOp0, and Sunday - https://gohski.es/3NSp3lE. Live stats will be available via GoHuskies.com and fans can also follow @UW_Baseball on Twitter to track the action.
Matchup History
Cal holds a slight edge in the series as the Huskies are 26-33 in the series since 2000. Recent history favors the Bears as well as the Huskies are 2-8 in the last ten, including the last five straight which were home losses.
Scouting The Huskies
Head coach Lindsay Meggs has a re-loaded roster for 2022, featuring 23 newcomers, including 10 JUCO transfers, 10 true freshmen, and three four-year college transfers.
For the seventh straight time, a trio of sophomores in RHPs Jared Engman, Calvin Kirchoff, and Case Matter will make up the weekend's starting rotation. They have proven to be reliable workorses on the mound and have each had electric moments, but with ERAs ranging from 4.29-5.35, a bit more consistency is a goal they are aiming for. Out of the bullpen, R-Jr. Stefan Raeth has been lights out with a 1.59 ERA over 34 innings, with 51 strikeouts to 9 walks.
On offense, Fr. OF Coby Morales (.326) edges out R-Fr. C Johnny Tincher (.320) in batting average and leads among players with a minimum of 2 PA/G and 75% of games played. This is in large part due to leading the team in last weekend's series with four hits, including two doubles, among players with at least 10 ABs. R-So. 1B WillΒ Simpson (.290) leads the team with seven home runs, including homers in three straight games just prior to last weekend's series.
Scouting the Golden Bears
Head Coach Mike Neu enters his fifth season at the helm. At 29-26 (15-15) in '21, his team narrowly missed out on a second NCAA postseason berth since '19 and hope to improve.
On the bump the Dawgs will face Fr. LHP Ian May and Jr. RHP Joseph King, with Sunday's starter yet to be determined. May went 5.1 innings against ASU last week giving up 5 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and a strikeout. King went 7 giving up just 2 runs on 5 hits with 8 strikeouts to just 1 walk.
At the plate, Jr. INF Keshawn Ogans leads the team batting .357 with 40 hits. Others in the .300 club include Jr. 1B Nathan Martorella and 5th Yr. INF Hance Smith who is looking to add to an 11-game hitting streak. The power is delivered by Fr. C Caleb Lomavita (.256) with 6 home runs and Jr. OF Dylan Beavers (.287) with 11.
