Huskies Drop Season Opener to UC Irvine

The Washington baseball team (0-1) opened up its season with aΒ tight 5-4 loss atΒ UC Irvine (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at Cicerone FieldΒ
Tyson Guerrero took the mound to make his Husky debut and battled through 3 2/3 innings, giving up just one run.Β
It was the Anteaters who manufactured the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, stringing together a double and two singles to take a 1-0 lead.Β
Will Simpson provided an explosive answer in the top of the second inning, blasting a home run over the fence in left-center field on the first pitch he saw.Β
UW played small-ball in the top of the third, started by Braiden Ward reaching base on an infield single to second. Ward then stole second base, his 56th career steal, to get himself into scoring position. Noah Hsue moved him over to third with a deep fly out to center field and Preston Viltz got him home with a ground ball to second base.Β
The Huskies added to their lead in the 4th inning, as Cole Fontenelle dropped in a single for his first career hit and RBI to score Christian Jones. Michael Petrie followed with a deep double over the head of the right fielder toΒ make it a 4-1 lead.
That would be the last run of the game for UW, as UC Irvine battled back, startingΒ with an RBI double in the 7th inning. In the 9th, a hit batter and throwing error gave the Anteaters runners on second and third base with one out. They then got a triple to deep center field to tie the game and another deep fly to center that dropped and gave them a 5-4 walk-off victory.Β
The Huskies are back in action tomorrow, February 21st, for another 1:00 p.m. PT first pitch against UC Irvine. The game will be streamed on BigWest.TV.Β
