Huskies Battle But Fall At No. 10 UCLA 85-80

LOS ANGELES – Washington had its best shooting night since early in the season and hung tough with the No. 10 team in the country, but couldn't pull off the upset, falling 85-80 in overtime at UCLA on Friday night at Pauley Pavilion.
The Huskies (10-8, 2-5 Pac-12) were led by Amber Melgoza who scored 14 points—all in the fourth quarter and overtime—adding seven rebounds and three assists. Missy Peterson rebounded from a pair of tough outings at home last week to score 13 in the game while Rita Pleskevich and Mai-Loni Henson each added 10 points. Quay Miller had a solid night as well, recording career-highs with six rebounds, four assists and three steals while adding eight points.
And while Washington shot an impressive 48.3% from the field and scored 70 points in regulation for the first time in Pac-12 play, the 10th-ranked Bruins (17-1, 6-1 Pac-12) forced 24 turnovers which they turned into 24 points and added 23 second-chance points off 28 offensive rebounds.
Washington again got off to a hot start in the game, using a 10-2 run to take a 10-4 lead at the midway point of the first quarter. Pleskevich scored eight of the team's first 10 points including a pair of three-pointers to get the Huskies going. UCLA would cut the lead back to two, but the Huskies closed on an 8-0 run highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Ali Bamberger and Peterson and led 22-11 after one.
The Bruins opened the second with a quick 6-0 run, but another Peterson three keyed a 10-0 run over the next two minutes as the Huskies went up 32-17 at the 4:35 mark. UCLA would narrow the gap to 10 but Washington took a 35-25 lead the half.
UCLA came out firing in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 18-7 over the first eight minutes to close to within one at 44-43. Mai-Loni Henson made an impressive three-point play to put UW back up four, but the Bruins would take their first lead of the game with a quick 12-0 run over a two-minute span to lead 55-47 just 30 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Washington would not go away as Melgoza hit a pair of baskets to pull the Huskies back to within four with 8:32 to go. After trading buckets over the next three minutes, UCLA still led 61-56 with 5:47 left when the Huskies came alive. Melgoza scored a tough fade away in the paint to key a 10-0 run to put the visitors back up five at 66-61 with 2:52 to go.
UCLA would answer with five quick points to re-tie the game. But Melgoza hit a fade away off the inbounds pass with 52 seconds left to put Washington back up 68-66. UCLA countered with a three-pointer, then after a UW turnover, hit one of two free throws to lead 70-68 with 10.5 seconds left.
But Melgoza again came through in the clutch, getting fouled on a drive to the hoop and hitting both free throws to tie the game with four seconds left and send it to overtime.
UCLA opened the overtime period strong, scoring eight of the first nine points to take a 78-71 lead with 2:27 to go. Melgoza scored a layup for UW's first field goal in overtime and Quay Miller got a steal and Fastbreak bucket to pull the Huskies back to within three with 57 seconds left. But that would be as close as Washington would get the rest of the way.
The Huskies shot well from the field in the game, especially late, connecting on 12-of-18 from the field in the fourth quarter and overtime periods combined. However, UCLA's ability to turn Washington over and get second-change attempts helped the Bruins take 23 more field goal attempts in the game.
Michaela Onyenwere led UCLA with 31 points and nine rebounds while Natalie Chou scored 18 points. Chou did her damage from three-point range where she was 4-of-9 while the rest of the Bruins combined to go 0-of-19.
The Huskies continue to play well on the road this year. Despite the setback, Washington is 6-2 away from home this year and has won nine of the last 12 away from Seattle dating back to last year. The Huskies have also won three of their last five Pac-12 road games dating back to 2018-19 after losing their previous 17.
Washington returns to action on Sunday, facing USC at Noon at the Galen Center.
