Washington Hosts Pair of Matches This Weekend
January 23, 2020 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE -- After a thrilling win this past Monday, Washington returns to the court looking to continue to ride the momentum, hosting a pair of non-conference matches this weekend at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies (3-1) start things off with a match against Grand Canyon University (0-4) on Friday before welcoming in Cal Poly (0-0) on Sunday. Both matches are slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. with free admission and free pizza offered to all fans.
Washington picked up a big won on Friday against UC Santa Barbara, an NCAA Tournament team last season and a likely pick to return this season. After dropping the doubles point, the Huskies won four singles matches highlighted by Jack Davis knocking off No. 8-ranked Joseph Guillin 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Grand Canyon is still looking for its first win of the season, but has experience playing on the road as three of their first four matches have been away from the GCU Tennis Facility. The Lopes are strong at No. 1 doubles, going 3-0 through the dual season, though are still looking for wins at No. 2 and No. 3. In singles play, GCU is 3-1 at No. 1 but has won just five of 17 matches from 2-6.
Cal Poly opens the season on Saturday, taking on Grand Canyon in a neutral site match at UW before facing the Huskies on Sunday. The Mustangs return eight players from last year's team which finished 14-10 overall, ranked No. 71 in the final ITA poll. They finished second in the Big West and advanced to their fourth-straight Big West Tournament Championship match.
