January 17, 2020 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Amber Melgoza poured in a team-high 13 points and Mai-Loni Henson added 12 points, but despite hanging with No. 18 Arizona State through much of the contest, Washington was unable to pull the upset in a 67-50 loss on Friday night.
Despite struggling from the field in the first half, the Huskies (10-6, 2-3 Pac-12) trailed by just 12 at the half and closed to within eight early in the fourth quarter. However, the Sun Devils (14-4, 4-2 Pac-12) were able to pull away late in the fourth and win a game much closer than the final score would indicate.
Melgza led the team in scoring four the fourth-straight contest, scoring 13 points and adding four assists and three rebounds. Henson reached on the strength of 4-of-8 shooting, adding a team-best eight rebounds in the contest. Sophomore Haley Van Dyke contributed 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting with the trio combining to score 35 of UW's 50 points.
The Huskies would end the game shooting 42.3% in the second half, but struggled to find the bottom of the basket in the first half, scoring just 18 points on 22.2% shooting. That would include a stretch of over 11 minutes without a field goal spanning the first and second quarters. However, the defense kept Washington in the contest, limiting Arizona State to just 30 points and forcing 10 turnovers.
In the second half, the Sun Devils quickly stretched the lead to 17 with five-straight points, but Washington would answer with an 8-0 run over the next 1:30 to pull back to within nine at 35-26 at the 7:52 mark. ASU would slowly stretch its lead back to 14 just after the media timeout, but the Huskies continued to claw back into the game and pulled back to within nine on a three-pointer by Darcy Rees with 1:32 left.
The Huskies carried that momentum in to the fourth quarter, scoring the first three points and trailing 48-40 just under a minute into the final period. But the Sun Devils would respond with a three-pointer on the next trip down which ignited a 10-2 run as ASU would stretch the lead back to 16 and not look back.
Washington kept the game close in the third thanks to hitting 50% from the field including connecting on 4-of-7 from three-point range. However, the Huskies struggled to slow down the Sun Devils, who would finish by hitting 50% in the game—the highest shooting percentage by a UW opponent this year. The Huskies also forced 15 turnovers by the Sun Devils but were only able to convert those into 10 points on the offensive end.
The Huskies wrap up their three-game homestand on Sunday, hosting No. 21 Arizona in a Pac-12 contest at 12:00 p.m.
