Bartlow's Late Tally Gives No. 10 Huskies 1-0 Win Over Portland
September 29, 2019 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Sophomore Ethan Bartlow scored on a free kick from just outside the box in the 81st minute as Washington survived a rough battle with Northwest rival Portland in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The victory was the fourth-straight for the Huskies, who improve to 8-1-0 on the season. UW remains perfect at home this season with a 5-0-0 record and is 9-0-1 at Husky Soccer Stadium in its last 10 home matches overall. The Pilots fall to 4-3-1.
Bartlow got the glory of the match-winner, but it was Jaret Townsend who set up the key goal. Townsend was taken down just outside of the box as be broke through a pair of defenders with a nice move and looked to be one move away from an open goal. However, he was fouled just at the edge of the box, setting up the free kick just to the left of the penalty arc. Bartlow stepped up to the ball, firing it over the wall and into the top right corner of the goal.
Washington held a 13-10 edge in shots but also created more scoring opportunities throughout the contest thanks to high pressure. However, the Portland defense stood strong. It wasn't until the 75th minute when a Pilots player was hit with a second yellow card that the Huskies were able to get the go-ahead goal.
Two minutes after the Washington goal, the Huskies were hit with a second yellow to freshman Imanol Rosales which put them a man down as well the rest of the match. Portland took advantage and had a couple of chances, hitting the side netting on a shot from a tough angle and having a long blast blocked by its own player with under four to play.
The match was tightly officiated throughout with just under 50 fouls whistled and 11 cards handed out.
Redshirt junior Bryce Logan got the cleansheet for the Huskies, making one save to record his third shutout and improve to 4-1-0 on the season.
Washington returns to action on Thursday with a huge Pac-12 showdown, playing at No. 1 Stanford at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
