SEATTLE - The non-conference season comes to a close this week with a rarity in the history of Husky volleyball, a home-and-home series across the country with the same opponent, and a Top-10 opponent no less. 10th-ranked Washington and 9th-ranked Wisconsin will battle for "UW" pride twice in three days this week, first in Madison, Wisc. on Thursday, Sept. 19, and then back in Seattle on Saturday, Sept. 21, for the long-awaited Husky home opener in Alaska Airlines Arena.
Thursday's match will be a 6 p.m. first serve Pacific time, 8 p.m. in Madison, and will be televised nationally by FS1. Saturday's home opener will be at 6 p.m. Pacific time and broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks Washington.
The last time Washington played consecutive matches against the same team with one at home and one on the road was 2011 when the Pac-12 season closed with home and road matches against Washington State. Recently, the Huskies have occasionally played the same team back-to-back in non-conference play, including just last season against San Diego, but always at the same location. The last time UW played consecutive matches against the same team at their respective home courts was 1990, when UW played at Gonzaga and six days later hosted Gonzaga.
The home-and-home with Wisconsin gives two of the best fan bases in college volleyball chances to show their support. Last season Wisconsin ranked No. 2 nationally in average attendance and the Huskies ranked 16th. The trip to Madison will be third challenging road environment the Huskies have faced thus far. Their only loss was in four sets in front of a big Hawaii crowd on opening weekend, but UW is coming off a four set win in front of a hostile crowd at 17th-ranked Creighton.
The trip to Madison and back will bring UW's total air miles flown before their first home match up to 14,820, or about 60-percent of the earth's circumference.
The Huskies moved up to a season-high No. 10 in the AVCA coaches poll this week after a 3-0 weekend at the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha. Senior Kara Bajema was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday.
The Badgers were picked as the preseason favorite in the Big Ten conference. After advancing to the Elite Eight last year, they are off to a 4-2 start with a couple close upset losses to then-No. 11 Marquette in five sets and then-No. 17 Baylor in four sets, and four 3-0 sweeps of Florida State, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Clemson. Wisconsin is hitting .301 for the year thus far with opponents hitting .225. Junior middle blocker Dana Rettke was a First Team All-American last year and she is currently hitting an impressive .482 while leading the team with 4.38 kills per set. Junior setter Sydney Hilley was a Second Team All-American and she is posting 11.62 assists per set thus far. Wisconsin also has a senior Third Team All-American opposite, Madison Duello, currently averaging 2.00 kills per set and hitting over .300.

Two outstanding plays from Avie Niece keep this rally alive until Claire Hoffman ends it. Neither play from Avie shows up in the box score so we'll applaud the effort here! ?????? pic.twitter.com/GliRbXv9Cq
