Carr, Yates Score In First UW Win Of 2019
September 01, 2019 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Two first-half goals propelled the Huskies to victory over the New Mexico Lobos 2-1, ending the Husky Invitational with a win. Makena Carr and Summer Yates had the goals for Washington, with Lisa Jensen earning an assist. Yates also had an assist on Carr's goal.
Jessika Cowart earned the 2019 Husky Invitational Most Valuable Defensive Player award for her work in the midfield, continually shutting down the Lobos as they attacked up the middle. Dani Hansen made six saves in goal, setting a new single-game high in her young career.
"New Mexico is a tough team to play against: they scrap, they fight, fatigue played a role for us with so many games in a short period of time," said Lesle Gallimore. "I'm proud of us, that was gutsy. Some people came off the bench and showed they deserve more minutes, our backs and Cowart defensively have been outstanding."
Isabella Castro started the Husky attack, picking up two shots in the first six minutes on the game. One of those shots led to the first of three consecutive corner kicks, with the Huskies scoring off the third. Castro would end the game with three shots, leading the team, while Olivia van der Jagt picked up two shots, including a dangerous header off a corner kick in the second half.
