No. 13 UW Keeps Up Winning Ways With 1-0 Victory Over Penn State
October 11, 2026 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – The No. 13 Washington women's soccer team completed a perfect three-match stretch at home Sunday, defeating Penn State 1-0 at Husky Soccer Stadium to secure all nine points on its home ground.
Alex Buck scored for the second time in as many matches to deliver UW its winning goal, while the Dawgs smothered the PSU attack for the ninth clean sheet of the season for Washington.
The two sides played to a stalemate through 45 minutes at 0-0, though Taylor Thomas came inches from grabbing the lead for Washington late in the half.
With just seconds remaining before the break, the sixth year hit Jadyn Holdenried's layoff first time, driving a shot from about 30 yards out that Nittany Lion keeper Mackenzie Gress was able to push over the bar as time expired.
The Huskies came out the aggressor in the second half and in the 56th minute, Buck delivered the break through.
Lucy Newlin skied over her mark to head the ball towards the 18, allowing Buck to chest it down and guide a perfectly placed shot with her left into the far corner to give UW the 1-0 advantage.
Buck continued to cause fits for the Penn State defense as the half wore on and in the 78th minute, the Medina, Washington, native appeared to be brought down inside the 18. Head coach Nicole Van Dyke called for a challenge but the call on the field was upheld after VAR review.
Despite being unable to secure an insurance goal, the Huskies were able to see out the remaining minutes without a serious threat to their goal, improving to 6-1-1 in Big Ten action.
Washington hits the road for a single match next week, taking on UCLA on Friday in Westwood. The Dawgs and Bruins will do battle in front of a national audience on the Big Ten Network, kicking off at 8:00 p.m. PT.

Nearly immediately after the restart, Buck once again darted towards the Nittany Lion goal on the breakaway. However, the PSU defense was able to recover as Gress closed the distance, forcing the speedy striker to fire her attempt over the bar. Can't slot it any better than that! ??
