SEATTLE – Titles are up for grabs in Texas this week as a dozen Dawgs conclude their seasons at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heat of Austin. This Wednesday through Saturday, June 5-8, at Mike A. Myers Stadium, the twelve Husky student-athletes will look to put a successful cap on what has been a season of significant progress.
Washington has made a big uptick in NCAA Outdoor Championship entries and, by extension, chances to score, going from four entries last season to 13 this year. There are five men and seven women heading to Texas, with Jonah Wilson entered in two events, the shot put and discus.
The meet will be televised live or streamed by ESPN. The field events are slated to have individual web streams on ESPN3. Wednesday's live broadcast will begin at 4:30 p.m. Pacific time on ESPN2. Thursday's broadcast starts at 5 p.m. and begins airing on ESPNU then switches to ESPN2 at 6 p.m. Friday the broadcast starts on ESPN at 5:30 p.m. Pacific. On the final day on Saturday, ESPN2 will carry the track action starting at 3:30 p.m.
Athletes reached Austin by surviving the West and East Preliminary Championships two weeks ago in Sacramento, Calif. and Jacksonville, Fla., respectively. Each site advanced the top-12 athletes or relays in every event on to Austin for fields of 24 in each event.
The USTFCCCA All-America format remains the same this season, as the top-eight finishers in every event will be named First Team All-Americans, the 9-16 finishers will be Second Team All-Americans, and 17-24 will be honorable mention.
Here are the Huskies who will compete this week
Izzi Batt-Doyle, Senior, Adelaide, Australia
Women's 10,000m Final: Thursday, 7:38 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 32:20.84
Batt-Doyle easily advanced through West Prelims in the 10k with a third-place finish. Her school record time of 32:20.84 came at the Stanford Invitational and ranks her fourth-fastest in Pac-12 history. She won the Pac-12 title in the 10k this season. Batt-Doyle is making her second NCAA Outdoor appearance; she was 12th in the 10k in 2017 before redshirting the 2018 track season. During the indoor season, Batt-Doyle was 12th in the 5,000-meters at NCAAs, giving her two Second Team All-America honors heading into Thursday's final.
Onyie Chibuogwu, Senior, Shoreline, Wash.
Women's Hammer: Thursday, 2:30 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 208-3 (63.48)
The Husky school record-holder in the hammer throw makes her first NCAA appearance in her final season. Chibuogwu is the first Husky to qualify in the women's hammer since Elisa Bryant in 2009. Chibuogwu redshirted the 2018 season and returned for a fifth year, breaking her own school record at the Beach Invitational with her 208-3 toss. She rebounded from a rough meet at Pac-12s by throwing 206-5 at West Prelims, the second-best mark of her career, to advance in fifth-place.
Olivia Gruver, Senior, Reisterstown, Md.
Women's Pole Vault: Thursday, 5:30 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 15-6 1/4 (4.73) *Collegiate Record
The NCAA Outdoor record-holder set the new mark at the Stanford Invitational back in April. That height tied her for sixth in U.S. history outdoors. Gruver is the two-time defending NCAA Outdoor Champion and looks to become the first woman ever to win three in a row. She transferred to Washington this season from Kentucky to continue working with her coach, Toby Stevenson. Gruver also had a clearance of 15-3 1/2 at the Beach Invitational. She did not compete at Pac-12s this year. At West Prelims, she needed a clutch third attempt make at 14-0 to stay alive and got it, then had a first attempt clearance of 14-2 to secure her spot back to NCAAs. Gruver plans to use a final year of indoor eligibility in 2020.
Emily Hamlin, Senior, Boise, Idaho
Women's 3,000m Steeplechase, Semifinal: Thursday, 5:32 p.m. Pacific – Final: Saturday, 3:54 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 9:53.11
Hamlin is the one Husky returning to NCAA Outdoors from 2018, in the same uniform, that is. A semifinalist a year ago, Hamlin will look to make her first final in the steeplechase. She knocked seven seconds off her PR in the West Prelims, running 9:53.11 to auto advance with the third-fastest time in school history. Hamlin was the Pac-12 runner-up in the steeplechase this season.
Elijah Mason, Redshirt Freshman, Casa Grande, Ariz.
Men's Discus: Friday, 5:05 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 199-0 (60.65)
The redshirt freshman has enjoyed an excellent first collegiate outdoor season, winning the Pac-12 title in the discus, the first for a Husky in that event since 1976. Mason threw 189-7 on his sixth and final attempt to move into the lead and get the victory at Pac-12s. He had a strong first throw of 188-5 at West Prelims to secure his spot in the top-12. Mason's season-best of 199-0 came at the Beach Invitational and ranks seventh in school history. Mason was a World Junior Championships finalist one year ago for the U.S. He and Jonah Wilson are the first Husky discus qualifiers at NCAAs since 2006.
Darhian Mills, Junior, Bothell, Wash.
Women's 400m Hurdles, Semifinal: Thursday, 7:00 p.m. Pacific – Final: Saturday, 4:57 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 57.02
Mills is appearing at her second NCAA Outdoor Championship but first in an individual event. She was part of the Husky 4x400m relay squad that qualified in 2017. Mills broke a 24 year old school record in her last time on the track, as she ran 57.02 seconds in the 400m hurdle quarterfinals to auto advance in fifth overall. Mills has now taken 1.75 seconds off her PR entering the season. She was fourth at the Pac-12 Championships in a then-PR of 57.69. She is the first Husky in the 400m hurdles semifinals since Gianna Woodruff in 2015.
Denham Patricelli, Senior, Maple Valley, Wash.
Men's Javelin, Wednesday, 2:45 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 241-6 (73.62)
Patricelli makes his first trip to the NCAA final site in his senior season. A fifth-year senior, Patricelli had a breakthrough over his past three meets. He had a 13-foot career-best at the National Relay Championships, tossing 236-6. He then finished second at the Pac-12 Championships with another PR of 241-6. Patricelli then breezed through West Prelims with a throw of 239-3 on his first attempt that was second-best overall. His mark of 241-6 ranks him fifth in UW history.
Hannah Rusnak, Sophomore, Lynden, Wash.
Women's Heptathlon: Friday and Saturday, first event Friday at 12:30 p.m. Pacific and first event Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Pacific
Season-best: 5,762
Rusnak has had a huge breakout sophomore season, smashing her freshman year best in the heptathlon by 800 points. She first crushed the UW school record at the Bryan Clay Invitational, where she scored 5,642 points, breaking a record that had stood since 1992 by 400 points. Rusnak then upped her score again at the Pac-12 Multi-Event Championships and took the title, becoming just the second Husky to win the heptathlon and first in 27 years. This is her first NCAA Outdoor appearance and first by a Husky in the heptathlon since 2004.
Allie Schadler, Sophomore, Tubac, Ariz.
Women's 1,500m, Semifinal: Thursday, 5:16 p.m. Pacific – Final: Saturday, 3:41 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 4:14.67
The sophomore has advanced to her first NCAA Outdoor Championship final site after running a new PR in the West Prelim quarterfinals to get one of the auto-advancing spots. Schadler was fifth at the Pac-12 Championships in the 1,500-meters. Indoors, she led off the Husky distance medley relay that finished seventh at NCAAs to earn First Team All-America honors. Her time of 4:14.67 ranks 10th in UW's deep history in the event.
Chase Smith, Junior, Helena Mont.
Men's Pole Vault – Wednesday – 2:30 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 17-8 1/2 (5.40) at National Relay Championships
Smith is appearing in his first NCAA Outdoor final after competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships in 2017 and 2018 with a best finish of 10th in 2018. Smith is enjoying his most productive outdoor season after setbacks outdoors the past two years, as he had his appendix removed midseason in 2017 and a knee issue cut short his 2018 outdoor campaign after one meet. Smith finished fourth at the Pac-12 Championships this year and made it through Prelims with two straight third-attempt makes at 17-5 and 17-7.
Mick Stanovsek, Junior, Cleveland, Ohio
Men's 1,500-meters, Semifinal: Wednesday, 2:16 p.m. Pacific - Final: Friday, 5:41 p.m. Pacific
Season-best: 3:41.20
This is the second straight NCAA Outdoor appearance for Stanovsek but first in a Husky uniform. He made the 1,500m final last year, placing 12th, while competing for Oregon. This season Stanovsek also qualified for the NCAA Indoor meet in the mile, placing 11th overall, and helped the DMR qualify for indoors and take 10th. Stanovsek was ninth in the Pac-12 1,500m final this year as he suffered a fall late in the race. He advanced through the West Prelims with a time of 3:45.10 for a time qualifier in round one then an auto qualifier in the quarterfinals in 3:42.37.
Jonah Wilson, Sophomore, Clovis, Calif.
Men's Shot Put: Wednesday, 4:40 p.m. Pacific
Men's Discus: Friday, 5:05 p.m. Pacific
Season-best Shot Put: 64-7 1/4 (19.69); Season-best Discus: 186-10 (56.94)
Wilson is the first Husky since Ben Lindsey in 2000 to qualify for NCAAs in both the shot put and the discus. Lindsey in 2000 was also the last Husky to qualify in the shot put, period. Wilson added nine feet to his outdoor shot put PR this season and added 10 feet to his discus PR. He was fourth in the discus at Pac-12s and fifth in the shot put. At West Prelims, he got the 12th and final qualifying spot in the discus and was 10th overall in the shot put. His shot put PR of 64-7 1/4 from the Stanford Invitational was the best by a Husky since Lindsey in 1998 and third-best in history.
