AUSTIN, Texas – Washington senior Denham Patricelli, a Maple Valley native, capped off his collegiate career with an eighth-place finish in the javelin throw today at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Today was the first of four days of action to crown track and field champions at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Patricelli put the Husky men's team on the board with one point with his eighth-place finish. It was his first career trip to the NCAA Championships and he had a very consistent series of throws, going 232-feet on three occasions, the best one going 232-feet and 10-inches.
The top-eight finish gets Patricelli a First Team All-America honor. He's the first Husky thrower to score at Nationals since 2014, when Quinn Hale was fifth in the javelin. Patricelli was also the top finisher out of the Pac-12 in the event.
Patricelli is the first All-America First Teamer at UW for first year assistant coach Andrew Ninow, but Ninow has now had at least one NCAA scorer in the throws in nine of his 11 career seasons as an assistant. In the javelin, Ninow has now had seven First Team All-America honors from men or women in the past nine years.
Junior Mick Stanovsek was the first Husky in action and the only one on the track today but he delivered with the needed top-five finish in his 1,500-meter semifinal. Stanovsek was never far from the lead throughout, and coming around the final turn there were still eight men in the lead pack. But Stanovsek pushed forward on the inside and secured himself a spot in Friday's final with a fourth-place finish in 3:44.50.
Junior Chase Smith made his first NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance in the pole vault today. Smith opened up with a first attempt make at 17-0 3/4 and then he had a second attempt clearance at 17-6 1/2. At the next height, 18-0 1/2, Smith had great attempts on both his second and third jumps, but just caught enough of the bar to brush it off both times to end his competition. Smith wound up in a tie for 15th-place to earn All-America Second Team honors.
Another Second Team All-America honor was earned by sophomore Jonah Wilson who finished 16th today in the shot put. Wilson was the first Husky to compete in the shot put at Nationals since 2000. The Clovis, Calif. native had a mark of 61-feet, 9-inches on his first toss but then had fouls on his next two tosses and was unable to crack the top-9 to earn three more attempts. Wilson will compete again on Friday in the men's discus.
Thursday will see the start of the women's competition, with six Huskies in action.
