Throwers Shine At Ken Shannon Invitational
May 04, 2019 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – The Ken Shannon Invitational brought the Washington Track & Field home season to a close today at Husky Outdoor Track, but not without some major career-best performances in the throws and some potential Regional qualifiers on the purple track.
At the home meet named for Washington's legendary throws guru, it was fitting that the Husky throwers excelled, as Connor Jost, Katherine Taylor, Ginny Mehl, and Angel Nkwonta all had big PRs and Jose Padilla added a season's-best.
Jost started things off with the biggest PR of the day in terms of distance, as he increased his hammer PR by 12 feet on his third attempt, going 194-feet, 3-inches. That put him just two feet outside the Husky top-10 list.
The next big mark came from senior Katherine Taylor in the women's javelin. On the first throw of her final competition at Husky Outdoor Track, Taylor threw 150-feet, 11-inches, a PR by 10 feet, and the new No. 7 mark in school history.
Towards the end of the meet, the cheers picked up at the east end of the field once again, as redshirt freshman Ginny Mehl launched a seven-foot PR in the discus, winning with a mark of 170-2 on her sixth and final attempt. That assures Mehl of a West Prelims trip as it puts her 34th in the West. It also ranks sixth in the Pac-12 this season, and also moved Mehl up to No. 7 on the Husky top-10 list. Right behind Mehl was freshman Makayla Kelby, who is redshirting, but she had a great toss herself at 169-3, and senior Onyie Chibuogwu took third at 152-8.
In the men's discus, junior Jose Padilla came out on top and had himself a season's-best throw of 173-1.
Last but certainly not least in the run of throwing PRs was junior Angel Nkwonta who had the first two 50-foot shot put tosses of her life. The first of those two went well past fifty, landing at 51-feet, 10-inches. She also had a toss of 50-8 1/4 on her fifth attempt. The 51-10 throw was the best by a Husky in 31 years, since 1988, and is the fourth-best mark in school history. It also locks up a West Prelims ticket for Nkwonta, putting her 27th in the region.
Nkwonta also had a consistent series in the hammer, finishing second at 182-4, just two inches off her PR, while Chibuogwu got the win at 188-10.
On the track, junior Khalil Winfrey got the win in the 100-meters and improved his chances for Regionals as he ran a wind-aided 10.40 seconds. Kemuel Santana was third at 10.51 and Jordan Lucas was fourth at 10.53.
Oscar Herrera took second in the men's 400m hurdles in 54.25.
Connor Morello was runner-up in the 800-meters right behind volunteer assistant Sam Prakel as Morello ran 1:50.80 and Prakel went 1:50.11.
Redshirt freshman Isaac Green got a win in the 1,500-meters in 3:48.19, as fierce winds during the first 90 minutes or so of racing made for difficult conditions despite the warm day. Nate Beamer was third in 3:49.44, and Alex Slenning was fourth in 3:49.72.
The women's track results were highlighted by the mid-distance crew. Junior Katie Rainsberger fought through the wind and led wire to wire to win the 1,500-meters in 4:20.82, which should secure at West Prelims berth for the All-American. Senior Anna Maxwell was second in 4:24.80 and redshirt frosh Shona McCulloch took fourth in 4:30.43.
In the 800-meters, freshman Kelly Makin went off a pace set by senior Nicole Goecke and rolled to a big PR, winning the race in 2:07.78, which puts her right on the bubble for Prelims.
Junior Sarah Stavig won the 400-meters when the wind was very strong with a time of 57.61, but when the winds died down she came back and clocked a big PR in the 200-meters to take third in 24.51.
Freshman Karlee Stueckle also easily won the 400-meter hurdles, by more than four seconds, despite fighting the winds to a time of 1:03.11.
Freshman Ida Eikeng, competing in Seattle for the first time though competing unattached, had an impressive all-around day in three events. Eikeng, the Norwegian transfer from Kentucky, got the win in the 100m hurdles in a wind-aided 13.46 seconds, and she won the 200-meters as well in 24.28 seconds, then set a new PR in the shot put with a toss of 45-feet, 0.25-inches.
A couple more Husky wins came in the field events, as Sam Richmond took the long jump with a best today of 23-1 3/4. Joey Weiler cleared a season-best 16-1 1/4 to win the men's pole vault.
In the high jump, Bryce Fausset took third with a make of 6-4 3/4. Monica Cohen cleared 12-2 in the women's pole vault to take third.
