SEATTLE β An eventful week for the Huskies will see action this Thursday, Saturday and Sunday as a trio of Huskies kick off championship competition while the rest of the squad makes final preparations. The focal point in Seattle will be the annual Ken Shannon Invitational, which wraps up the home season this Saturday, May 4, as part of a busy day of UW sports on Montlake.
Β
At Husky Outdoor Track, the Ken Shannon Meet will have its first races at 1 p.m. giving fans attending the Windermere Cup a chance to check out some track as well on their way back from the Cut. Admission is free. The first races will be some of the best of the day, as the men's and women's 1,500-meter fields are very competitive, with All-American Katie Rainsberger racing for the women and several men looking to tune up for next week's Pac-12 Championships including Nate Beamer, Nick Laccinole, and Alex Slenning.
Β
The first events on Saturday will be the hammer throws at 10 a.m. with the meet expected to conclude around 3:30 p.m.
Β
Washington will recognize its senior class on Saturday at 2:52 p.m. Huskies to be recognized include Blaise Black, Fred Huxham, Jordan Lucas, Denham Patricelli, and Connor Morello for the men. Women include Mikelle Ackerley, Imani Apostol, Izzi Batt-Doyle, Onyie Chibuogwu, Hannah Derby, Nicole Goecke, Olivia Gruver, Emily Hamlin, Carly Lester, Anna Maxwell, Katherine Taylor, and Raquel Tjernagel.
Β
Meanwhile this weekend down in Tucson, Arizona, the Husky multi-eventers will get a head start on the postseason with the Pac-12 Multi-Event Championships, held Saturday and Sunday at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. Sophomore Hannah Rusnak, who broke the UW school record in her most recent heptathlon effort, will be among the top contenders for the women's title. She'll be joined in the heptathlon by junior Elinor Jones Toutant. Sophomore Parker Kennedy will go in his first Pa-12 decathlon competition.
Β
But before all of that, four Huskies are heading back to Stanford to race at the prestigious Payton Jordan Invitational on Thursday evening at Cobb Track & Angell Field. Mick Stanovsek, Izzi Batt-Doyle, Allie Schadler, and Emily Hamlin are the four Huskies on their way to the Bay Area.
Β
At the Payton Jordan, which will be streamed live on Flotrack.org, Stanovsek and Schadler will both be racing 1,500-meters, Stanovsek in section one on the men's side and Schadler in section three for the women. Batt-Doyle is racing another 5k, in the top heat that includes several U.S. Olympians, plus some of the top current collegiates, along with two former Husky greats in Amy-Eloise Neale and Mel Lawrence. Hamlin will be in a loaded steeplechase field that features current NCAA Champion Allie Ostrander of Boise State.
The steeplechase will be first on Saturday evening at 7:18 p.m., then Schadler will race at approximately 8:11 p.m., followed by Stanovsek at 9:20 p.m., and Batt-Doyle at 9:26 p.m.
Β
The Ken Shannon Invitational will serve a couple purposes for the Huskies. Several athletes expected to travel to Tucson next week will compete as final tune-ups for the conference championships, some in shorter distances than they plan to run at Pac-12s. For those Huskies who won't continue on, the meet is an important capper to a season and a chance to set some personal-bests to carry into the offseason.
