No. 1 UCLA Takes Game One, 8-3, Over Huskies
May 17, 2019 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES β Reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week Garrett Mitchell drove in four runs and UCLA ace Ryan Garcia struck out 13 batters as No. 1 UCLA beat visiting Washington, 8-3, Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Huskies (28-20, 12-13 Pac-12) entered the weekend needing to find a way to try and solve top-ranked UCLA (43-8, 20-5) to bolster their post-season resume, but in game one of the three-game series the Bruins led from start to finish to snap UW's five-game win streak.
Β
UCLA wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the first inning. Mitchell doubled on the first pitch of the game and shortstop Ryan Kreidler singled him home on the very next pitch from freshman hurler David Rhodes.
Β
The Huskies would tie things up in the second on the legs of shortstop Ramon Bramasco β he singled, stole second and took third and home on wild pitches β but the Bruins would tack on three more runs in their half of the inning. Mitchell struck again, this time a bases-loaded, two-out triple that made the score 4-1. It was the first of two triples for Mitchell, who finished the night 3-for-5.
Β
UW cut the Bruins lead to one run in the fifth with a pair of unearned runs. With two outs and runners on the corner, Mason Cerrillo hit a chopper to first base that Michael Toglia had trouble handling and then compounded the problem when he shoveled the ball past Garcia, who was covering the bag. Michael Petrie and Braiden Ward both scored on the miscue to make it a 4-3 game.
Β
The fifth marked the final inning for Garcia (8-0) as he racked up 113 pitches in recording 15 outs β 13 of which came via punch outs. He allowed just one earned run and saw his Pac-12 leading ERA nudge up from 1.29 to 1.30.
Β
The fifth also marked the end of Rhodes' night. After he retired the first two batters, his night was done with 83 pitches under his belt. He allowed the first four runs on five hits, walked four and struck out one. His record went to 5-5 on the season.
Β
The Bruins would play add on after Rhodes left the game. They scored a single run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Β
The Huskies and Bruins resume the series on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The game will be telecast on the Pac-12 Network.
