Jones Shines, But Huskies Fall To No. 1 UCLA, 4-0

LOS ANGELES – Husky junior pitcher Jordan Jones threw an eight-inning complete game and had a season-high 10 strikeouts but No. 1 UCLA, which boasts the nation's top-ranked pitching staff, limited the UW offense to one hit and won 4-0 Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium to clinch the series.
Jones, who was making his 42nd career start, allowed six hits and four earned runs in throwing his second career complete game, but unfortunately for him, UCLA starter Jack Ralston and three relievers were nearly untouchable.
Ralston fanned nine in 6+ innings and allowed just one hit – a Nick Kahle fourth-inning single.
It turned out to be the only Husky hit of the game and was one of five base runners on the night.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the second when Michael Toglia and Jake Pries reached on back-to-back singles and Jack Stronach grounded out, scoring Toglia. They added two more runs in the fifth on a double by Matt McClain, followed by a triple from Garrett Mitchell, who would eventually score on a groundout.
Toglia added to the Bruins lead 12th home run of the year to lead off the sixth gave the Bruins a 4-0 lead.
The Huskies best scoring opportunity would come in the seventh when the first two batters – Ramon Bramasco and Rollie Nichols – walked to start the inning. But reliever Nate Hadley would get a strikeout, fielder's choice and another strikeout to get out of the inning.
The Huskies will try to win the final game of the series on Sunday with at 12:00 p.m. scheduled first pitch. The game will be telecast on the Pac-12 Network.
