Husky Bats Breakout In 8-3 Win At Portland
April 23, 2019 | Baseball
PORTLAND – The Huskies scored in each of the first five innings and never looked back, defeating Portland 8-3 on Tuesday night at Joe Etzel Field. Jack Enger was excellent in relief, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings, striking out a career high seven batters, and earning the win.
The Huskies improved to 18-17 on the season and 6-10 on the road.
Mason Cerrillo and Connor Blair each tallied three-hit games to lead the way for Washington, while Rollie Nichols and Joe Wainhouse each had multi-hit games.
Blair opened up the scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single up the middle to bring home Cerrillo. The Pilots quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame with three runs. Henry Cheney hit a solo shot while Matt Kelly hit a 2-run home run, but that would be the only score on the night for Portland.
The Pilots lead didn't last long as UW responded for three runs in the second. Cerrillo cut the deficit to 3-2 on a base hit that that plated Rollie Nichols. Later in the inning, Joe Wainhouse scampered home on a wild pitch for the third Husky run of the ballgame. A productive groundout from Braiden Ward scored Ben Baird to give the Dawgs a 4-3 lead.
UW kept the pressure on in the third, plating two more runs on a Rollie Nichols RBI groundout and a Wainhouse RBI double. Nichols made it a 7-3 ballgame in the fourth when he drove in Kahle on a ground out. In the top of the fifth, Blair drove in his second run of the night on an infield single to bring home Cerrillo, extending the UW lead to 8-3.
The Huskies host Arizona State for a three-game series, Friday through Sunday.
