THE SKINNY:
The Washington Baseball team will take a quick up-and-down, one-day trip South on I-5 to face the Portland Pilots this Tuesday at Joe Etzel Field. The Huskies (17-17) are looking to build some momentum before they host 15th-ranked Arizona State for three games this weekend at Husky Ballpark.
Last week, the Huskies beat Santa Clara, 11-1, on Monday and then lost 2-of-3 against BYU over the weekend. The Huskies won game one of the series, 1-0, but dropped the next two by scores of 7-3 and 4-0.
Tuesday's match up vs. Portland will be UW's fifth-consecutive game against teams from the WCC. The game is the first of two between the clubs during the season. Portland will make a trip up to Seattle and face UW on May 8 at Husky Ballpark.
Last season, the Huskies and Pilots played on May 15 with Portland walking away with a 6-4 win at Husky Ballpark. Ryan Hoogerwerf hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning to give Portland a 6-1 lead and Washington could not complete a rally. After that loss, Washington would go on to win five-straight games to propel themselves into the NCAA tournament.
Historically, UW holds a 96-49-1 advantage in the series.
NOTEWORTHY:
--Junior Ben Baird takes a career-high nine-game hit streak into Portland. He is 11-for-33 (.333) during that stretch.
--Freshman Colton Cassinelli is hitting .500 for the month of April (8-for-16), including a 3-for-3 effort against BYU last Friday.
--Sophomore right-hander Jack Enger has struck out 21 batters over 12 innings in six April relief appearances. He is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA during the month.
--UW Head Coach Lindsay Meggs needs three more wins to reach 900 for his career.
