No. 5 Stanford Completes Sweep With 6-1 Win Over UW
April 14, 2019 | Baseball
Stanford, Calif.ย โย Kyle Stowers homered on the first pitch a Stanford hitter saw to set the tone for the fifth-ranked Cardinal in a 6-1 win Sunday that completed a three-game sweep over Washington at Sunken Diamond.
ย
UW starter Josh Burgmann entered the game having not allowed a home run all season long, but Stowers liked the first pitch he saw and sent it over the right-field fence for a quick 1-0 advantage. After the homer, the Cardinal kept the pressure on by stringing together four-straight singles, including an RBI hit from Andrew Daschbach that gave his team a 2-0 lead.
ย
That would be enough offense for Stanford (24-5, 10-2 Pac-12) as they would use three pitchers to shut down the Huskies (15-15, 5-10) and keep their hold on first place in the Pac-12 Conference. The Huskies have now dropped nine-straight games in league action.
ย
Burgmann (3-2) settled down after the first inning. He cruised through the next three innings, but after allowing a lead-off single to Maverick Handley in the fifth, the game was turned over to the bullpen. Handley would eventually score and three more runs crossed the plate in the inning to give Stanford a 6-0 cushion.
ย
The Huskies had chances to keep the game close early and would have runners on base throughout the game against starter Erik Miller (4-0), including two on in each of the first three innings, but they could never produce a clutch hit against the Cardinal southpaw. Miller struck out eight over five innings and was lifted after throwing 97 pitches.
ย
UW finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth when pinch-hitterย Michael Petrieย reached on a double andย Ramon Bramascoย scored him with a single back up the middle. But Bramasco's hit would be the final one of nine for the Huskies. Austin Weiermiller would close the door on any hopes of a Husky comeback in the ninth.
ย ย
Nick Roberts was 2 for 4 with a double to lead the UW offense.
ย
The Huskies will stay in the Bay Area and play Monday at Santa Clara. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. PT.
