Huskies Head Home On Strong Note, Blast Broncos, 11-1
April 15, 2019 | Baseball
Santa Clara, Calif. – Three pitchers held Santa Clara to four hits and Washington bounced back from a tough offensive weekend by pounding out 18 hits in an 11-1 win over the Broncos Monday at Stephen Schott Field.
"I'm proud of our guys for their effort today," Husky Coach Lindsay Meggs said. "This has been a really tough stretch for us but it happens at times and you have to deal with it.
"You have to keep your head down and continue to work. We did that today and good things happened."
Seven different Huskies recorded an RBI and eight starters recorded a hit as the Huskies (16-15) kept the pressure on the Broncos' pitchers all game long. They had a runner on base in every inning and put at least two on in each of the first eight innings.
The No. 3 through 6 hitters in the Huskies' order combined to go 12 for 22 at the plate. Cleanup hitter Connor Blair paced the Huskies with a 5-for-5 day including two doubles, a RBI and a walk. His five hits were the most by a Husky since Austin Rei recorded five in 2014.
The Huskies scored five runs all weekend against No. 5 Stanford, so it was a welcome sight when they jumped out of the gates by sending 10 hitters to the plate and scored five times in the first inning. Nick Kahle started a parade of four-consecutive hits with a RBI double that also extended his season-high hit streak to 10 games. Blair followed with a double of his own that scored Kahle and extended his own hitting streak to eight games.
Jonathan Schiffer chased home Blair with a single before the Huskies would go on to load the bases against starter Locke Bernhardt (2-2). Braiden Ward capped the inning by delivering a single that scored two more runs.
It was the sign of things to come for the UW offense. Santa Clara (7-27) got a run back in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, but UW answered with a sac fly of their own, coming off the bat of Ramon Bramasco in the third inning.
The Huskies took a seven-run lead in the sixth, 8-1, after Michael Petrie served a clutch, two-out, two-run single into centerfield. They added another run in the seventh on a Blair RBI single and would score two more in the eighth. One run scored on a Nick Roberts RBI single and Kahle capped the scoring with his third hit (3 for 6, double, 2 RBI) – a run-scoring single that plated Braiden Ward.
While the offense hummed, the UW pitchers were also clicking on all cylinders against Santa Clara, who got no-hit a day earlier by Pacific.
Jack DeCooman got the ball to start and went the first four innings, surrendering the lone run of the night on just two hits. He walked one and struck out two in a very solid start.
Jack Enger (2-0) picked up the win, following DeCooman with three scoreless innings. He struck out six and limited the Broncos to two hits.
Stevie Emanuels closed the show with two hitless innings in which the only base runner he allowed came on a walk.
Besides Blair and Kahle, four other Huskies had multi-hit games – Petrie, Ward, Schiffer and Ben Baird.
The Huskies return home and will host BYU for three games, starting Thursday, April 18 at 6:00 p.m.
