March 03, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- Hannah Johnson and Haley Van Dyke scored 10 points and Mai-Loni Henson added eight but Washington was unable to pull off the upset, falling 72-53 to No. 7 Stanford Sunday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena in the final regular season game for both teams.
The Huskies wrap up the regular season at 9-20 and 2-15 in Pac-12 play while the Cardinal move to 25-4 and finish second in the conference at 15-3.
Johnson who was wearing Deja Strother's No. 34 in the game to honor her fellow senior who was medically retired earlier in the year, reached double-figures for the first time since December, draining two three-pointers in the game. Fellow senior Jenna Moser added five points, six rebounds and three assists.
Van Dyke saved her best for last, scoring all 10 points in the fourth quarter, also reaching double-figures for the first time since December. She set a career-high with a pair of three pointers and hit an impressive reverse lay-up late in the game.
Johnson opened the scoring for the Huskies with five points, hitting a tough runner then draining a three. That gave the Huskies an early 5-2 lead in the contest. But Stanford hit back-to-back three-pointers, igniting an 17-2 run which put the Cardinal up 19-7 with under a minute to go. Mai-Loni Henson converted a three-point play to end the run with 24 seconds left but Stanford would hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to take a 22-10 lead after one. Washington struggled from the field, hitting just 4-of-15 from the field while Stanford converted 9-of-17.
Melgoza opened the second quarter with a mid-range jumper to get the Huskies on the board, but the Cardinal would answer with back-to-back buckets to stretch the lead to 14. Two minutes later, Montana Hagstrom drained a three from the corner and after a steal, Johnson drained a three from the top to cut the deficit to 26-19 with 6:17 to go. After a Stanford timeout, the Cardinal responded, going on a 12-1 run the rest of the quarter to take a 38-20 lead to the half.
After Stanford opened the second half with a bucket, Jenna Moser got in on the act with a three-pointer from the top. The Cardinal responded with a quick three, but the Huskies would get a three from Missy Peterson one minute later then layup by Henson to cut it to 45-30. Stanford again had the answer, though, getting tough jumper on the next possession to key an 8-2 run and go up 53-32 at the 5:37 mark. Rees ended the run with a corner three after the Huskies pulled down a pair of offensive rebounds to start a 7-1 Husky run as Henson and Johnson added buckets. Johnson's tough putback made it a 54-39 game with 2:01 to go in third. Again, though Stanford had the answer, outscoring Washington 8-0 the rest of the way to lead 62-39 after three.
Despite holding Stanford to just one bucket through the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, Washington was unable to take advantage, missing their first six shots before Moser hit a tough layup between the trees down low. But the Cardinal would find the bucket after that, draining back-to-back three-pointers to make it 70-41. Haley Van Dyke went on an 10-2 run by herself over the next two minutes, hitting a pair of three pointers, a jumper off an in-bounds pass and a nifty reverse layup to make it 72-51 with 34 seconds left.
Dijonai Carrington led Stanford with 19 points and eight rebounds while Kiana Williams added 13 and Alanna Smith contributed 12.
Washington opens the Pac-12 Tournament on Thursday as the No. 11 seed, taking on the No. 6 seed Utah at 8:30 p.m. at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
