SEATTLE – The outdoor track season shifts into high gear this week as the Huskies take a big squad down to the Stanford Invitational at Cobb Track & Angell Field. The meet goes all day Friday into the late hours and picks up again Saturday morning to finish in the evening.
A small group of Huskies got a rust-buster two weeks ago in West Seattle, but the Stanford Invite will be the biggest meet for UW as a team since the MPSF Championships closed out the Dempsey Indoor season. Just under fifty Huskies will be traveling to Palo Alto.
The Friday distance races at the Stanford Invitational rarely fail to produce outstanding times, so a number of Dawgs will be looking for PRs or early season qualifying times in the 1,500m, 3k steeplechase, 5,000m and 10,000-meters on Friday.
The 100-meters, 400-meters, 100- and 110-meter hurdles, and 400-meter hurdles will also take place Friday on the track. Field events at Stanford are split between collegiate and invitational sections. On Friday field events include the men's hammer (collegiate), women's shot (collegiate + invite), women's javelin (invite), women's pole vault (collegiate + invite), men's long jump (collegiate + invite), men's javelin (invite), women's long jump (collegiate + invte), and men's discus (collegiate + invite).
On Saturday, featured track events will be the 200-meters, 800-meters, and both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Field events include the women's hammer (collegiate), men's triple jump (collegiate and invite), men's hammer (invite), men's pole vault (invite), women's discus (collegiate + invite) and men's shot put (collegiate + invite).
Men's Entries: In the 100-meters and 200-meters, the Huskies will have Jordan Lucas, Kemuel Santana, and Khalil Winfrey, and Evan Mafilas and Jason Palmer are entered in the 400-meters. Cass Elliott is entered in the 400-meter hurdles.
Devan Kirk will race at 800-meters, then four Dawgs are entered in the 1,500-meters, with redshirt freshman Talon Hull entered in the invitational heat. Nate Beamer is in heat two, Fred Huxham is in heat three, and Connor Morello is in heat four. Jumping up to the 10k for the first time on the track will be redshirt freshman Tibebu Proctor while Julius Diehr is set for his season debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Husky vaulters Blaise Black, Zach Shugart, and Chase Smith will all be in the invitational section, and Sam Richmond will be in the men's long jump invite. Jaylen Taylor is entered in the triple jump invite as well as the long jump collegiate section.
In the throws, Jonah Wilson and Jose Padilla are both entered in the invitational shot put section. Padilla and Elijah Mason are in the invite of the discus, with Wilson in the collegiate flight. The javelin throwers get to make their long-awaited season debuts, with senior Denham Patricelli, sophomore Jacob Wachtendonk, and freshman Zach Annanie all in the invite section.
Women's Entries: Freshman Aaliyah Wilson will be the one Husky in the women's 100-meters and will also run the 100m hurdles.
