Huskies Drop Match To Santa Clara 4-3

SEATTLE ---- The Washington men's tennis team lost to Santa Clara 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Nordstrom Tennis Center. After Sunday's match, the Huskies are now 2-3 on the year.
The Huskies got off to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches.
Senior Piers Foley and sophomore Jack Davis breezed through their doubles match winning 6-1 over Andrew Gu and Jesus Barajas in the first doubles spot in lineup. Foley and Davis improved their doubles record to 3-1 in dual matches and 10-3 overall.
On Court 3, the freshman duo of Kasper Smith and Ewen Lumsden fell to Connor Garnett and Rob Seby 3-6, as the doubles point would be decided by the match on Court 2.
Senior Kawika Lam and senior Enzo Sommer came through to earn the doubles point over Vasileios Ilipooulos and Arthur Neuhaus 7-5. Lam and Sommer were squared up at 4-4 before winning three of the next four games and the set. Lam and Sommer improved their record to 2-0 in dual matches and 6-2 overall.
The singles matches proved to be competitive all around as four out the six matches went to a third set.
Santa Clara tied up the match at 1 as Barajas defeated Sommer 3-6, 4-6. The Broncos then extended their lead to 2-1 as Gu defeated Davis on Court 2 6-7 (5), 1-6.
Freshman Ernesto Turegano battled back from a one set deficit to his match on Court 5, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to tie up the overall match at two points apiece with three singles matches remaining.
Foley was the next Husky to win as he also came back from a one set deficit to beat Garnett 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3.
With only two singles matches remaining, the Huskies lead 3-2, however the Broncos would go on to win both of those and claim a 4-3 victory.
Freshman Ewen Lumsden lost on Court 4 to Iliopoulos 4-6, 6-4, 1-6. Senior Sebastian Hawken dropped the deciding match to Seby 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
Washington will hit the road for their next two matches, when they face Michigan on Feb. 8 and Wisconsin on Feb. 10
