PULLMAN, Wash. --- A big third quarter blew open what had been a close game as Washington lost 94-61 at Washington State in the second game of the Boeing Apple Cup Series on Friday night at Beasley Coliseum.
The Huskies fall to 8-17 on the season and to 1-12 in Pac-12 play while the Cougars move to 9-16 and to 4-10 in the conference.
Amber Melgoza led Washington with 15 points and while eight of nine Huskies scored in the game, she was the lone player in double-figures for the visitors. Darcy Rees, Mai-Loni Henson and Hannah Johnson each added eight points.
After a close first half, Washington State used a big third quarter to pull away, scoring the first 11 points of the second half and outscoring the Huskies 23-13 in the period.
But Washington struggled offensively in the game, hitting just 37.1% in the game while the Cougars connected on a season-high 60.7% in the game.
Washington opened the game strong, jumping out to a quick 9-4 lead with four players scoring buckets for the Huskies over the first four minutes of the game. But WSU answered right back with a quick 7-0 run over the next two minutes to take back the lead at 11-9. Khayla Rooks ended the run with a three-pointer from the wing to put the Huskies back up by one with 3:50 left in the quarter. However, the Cougars kept the run going and closed out the quarter on an 8-1 run to lead 19-13 after one.
The Huskies came out firing in the second quarter, using a 6-2 run to cut the WSU lead to two with Darcy Rees hitting a layup in the paint to make it 21-19 at the 6:44 mark. But the rest of the quarter belonged to the Cougars, who used a long 18-3 run to break the game open and take a 39-22 lead with 1:17 left. Washington would get a three-pointer from Montana Hagstrom at the 1:10 mark—her second of the quarter—to cut it back to 14 but still trailed 43-27 at the half.
Washington State pulled away in the third quarter, opening the period on an 11-0 run to take a 54-27 lead at the 6:07 mark. Rooks would drain a three to snap the run, but the Cougars continued to pull away, outscoring Washington 23-13 in the quarter to lead 66-40 after three. The Huskies would play even with WSU over the final quarter, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
All six of the Cougars' main rotation reached double-figures in the game led by Borislava Hristova and Chanelle Molina who each had 18.
Washington remains on the road next week, traveling to the mountains to face Utah and Colorado before closing out the season at home the first week of March.
