Washington Falls 76-74 to Vanderbilt in Husky Classic Finale
December 21, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE --- A questionable call followed by a last-second layup by Vanderbilt led to a tough 76-74 overtime loss for Washington in the final game of the 25th Husky Classic on Saturday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies (8-3) had a strong first half and despite some shooting struggles, managed to battle with the Commodores (9-3), overcoming a late deficit to force overtime. However, Vanderbilt would take advantage of a block/charge call with 11 seconds left in the extra frame to get the ball back and score with 0.5 seconds left.
Amber Melgoza, who led the team with 16 points on the night, appeared to draw a foul with time winding down in the second overtime, but the call went the way of the visitors. Instead of a pair of free throws for the senior, Melgoza fouled out on the play and Vanderbilt's Mariella Fasoula would hit a hook in the lane to give Vandy the win.
Melgoza was 5-for-11 on the night with four rebounds, three steals and three assists while Missy Peterson added 15 points, five boards and four assists. Sophomore Haley Van Dyke—who was named to the Husky Classic All-Tournament Team—scored 14 points for the second-straight game, adding nine rebounds, five steals and a pair of assists.
Washington had one of its best halves in the last two years, scoring 49 points on 51 percent shooting to lead 49-38 at the break. The Huskies led by as many as 14 in the opening half and hit six three-pointers through the first 20 minutes.
But Vanderbilt came storming back in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 18-10 to close to within three at 59-56. Washington would maintain its lead through much of the fourth quarter until the Commodores took their first lead since early in the game with a pair of free throws to make it 71-70 with 1:20 to play.
The Huskies would come right back down and took the lead right back as Peterson hit a tough pull-up jumper from the right elbow with 58 seconds left. Washington nearly stole the ball back from the Commodores on their final possession, but the ball didn't bounce the Huskies way and Vandy was able to get a shot off as the shot clock expired. The teams battled for the rebound, but it went back to Vanderbilt with a new shot clock and 31 seconds to go.
Off the in-bounds pass, the Huskies fouled Fasoula but she would make just one of two to tie the game with 26 seconds left. Vanderbilt had fouls to give and used them to get the clock down to four seconds left with the Huskies in-bounding from the sideline. The in-bounds pass was bobbled down low and by the time the ball got out to an open Melgoza, her last-second fling rattled off.
In the extra period, the Husky defense shined, but the offense struggled, missing all six shots from the field and turning the ball over five times. Washington would allow just two baskets by Vanderbilt, though, one on the second possession and another on the final possession.
The game closed out non-conference play for the Huskies, who open Pac-12 action on Sunday, December 29 at Washington State in the first of two games in the Boeing Apple Cup Series.
