Huskies Advance On Holmes Goal
November 16, 2019 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – In the first-ever postseason edition of the rivalry, the four-seed Washington Huskies defeated the Seattle U Redhawks 1-0 on Shae Holmes' first career goal. The win pushes the Huskies on to the second round, set for next weekend in Tallahassee, Florida, against South Florida.
Siena Ruelas was outstanding in net, especially during a big Seattle U push in the first half. Ruelas made two saves in under a minute following Seattle U's first corner of the game. Then, in the 21st minute, Ruelas came out to make a sliding save on a one-on-one breakaway, kicking the ball away to kill any attack. She would end the game with five saves and another shutout.
The final 15 of the first half saw the Husky offense put the pressure on. Summer Yates backheeled a cross along to Makena Carr at the far post, who beat the keeper but shot high. A few minutes later, Jessika Cowart got a high foot on a bouncing corner that touched off the keeper's outstretched glove before being controlled.
Holmes' goal in the 56th minute opened the floodgates for the Huskies, who took control of the ball for almost all of the remaining time. Washington allowed only two runs into the attacking half by Seattle U in the next 20 minutes and pounded the ball into the corners for the final tics of the clock. Sianna Siemonsma was particularly dangerous down the left wing, helping the Huskies stay forward and drawing a yellow card against the Redhawks.
