Possession Domination Not Enough In 2-0 Loss
November 22, 2019 | Women's Soccer
TALLAHASSEE – The 2019 season came to an end for the Washington Huskies with a 2-0 loss to the USF Bulls in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies were on the attack all game but could not break through despite seven shots on goal. In total, Washington had the ball in the attacking half over 60% of the time and let USF into the final fourth just 5% of the time.
Washington's season comes to a close with the loss, with the Huskies going 13-6-2. This was also the last game for Lesle Gallimore as Husky head coach: Gallimore won 270 games with Washington and made 15 NCAA Tournaments, advancing to at least the second round ten times.
It was a very even first half that unfortunately saw the Huskies facing a deficit at halftime for just the third time all season. Two early steals by Isabella Castro helped the Huskies break USF's early attack, while Siena Ruelas stood tall with a number of good saves early on.
A sequence in the 21st minute saw Summer Yates fire a rocket off a defender, then get it back and pass to Hussen in the box. Ameera Hussen's shot was just barely touched by the diving keeper, but it was enough to push it wide barely.
Washington only upped the pressure even more following USF's counterattack second goal, with chance after chance the rest of the way. Kennedy Smith had a great chance after Yates found here with a through ball in the 61st minute, only for the shot to be punched away.
In the 75th minute, the Huskies had a number of golden opportunities. First, Yates drew a penalty kick but had the shot punched away. Two straight corners followed. On the second, Washington had an open net in front of them after the USF keeper dropped the ball unimpeded, but a foul was inexplicably called to end that chance.
Another breakaway was stopped by a USF card, this time giving the Huskies a free kick on the corner of the box. Hussen's shot beat the keeper and hit off the crossbar. Olivia van der Jagt followed it with a shot that went wide on Washington's last big opportunity.
